Carpenter: SCOPE AND FUNCTION: Works independently in a "zone", or as the only Carpenter/Maintenance Mechanic on a particular campus reporting directly to a second level supervisor. May guide and instruct other staff in the performance of a wide range of carpentry and mechanical duties required for all facilities. Such duties may be based on work orders which provide little or no instruction or assistance. Responsible for estimation of work and procuring appropriate materials for him/herself or the group. May guide and instruct craft trainees. May perform any duties of the group. May be assigned to perform general duties in other trade areas. DUTIES: -Primarily responsible for the planning and coordination of carpentry duties. -Selects specified materials in accordance with various building codes. -Prepares layouts and marks cutting and assembly lines. -Erects scaffolding and structural framework. -Applies dry wall and paneling to walls and ceilings. -Lays and repairs subflooring; installs and repairs flooring tile and linoleum. -Repairs, fits and installs window, doors, weather stripping, trim, etc. -Uses a variety of hand and power tools and measuring instruments. -Cleans shop and work areas. -Detects faulty operation of equipment; reports questionable conditions to supervisor; issues work orders to supervisor as necessary. -Conducts inventory of equipment, materials and supplies. -Advises management when to reorder stock. -Responsible for estimating work time, writing up lists of appropriate and needed materials, and providing such materials for him/herself or the group. -Performs related duties as required. -Provides guidance and instruction to craft trainees. REQUIREMENTS: -Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent, plus four years experience performing carpentry work. -Must be competent in performing complex and varied carpentry tasks. -Successful completion of an approved training program or of a certified apprenticeship program in the trade, plus two years experience and proven competency in performing complex and varied carpentry work may be substituted for the above experience. -Requires good communication skills, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and blueprints.
