About the position Responsibilities • Direct the day-to-day operation of the water and wastewater crews. • Assign work to various crews and monitor progress daily. • Establish priorities to deal with emergencies and unanticipated needs. • Hire, train, discipline, and evaluate employees to ensure qualified talent is retained. • Handle day-to-day operations of water distribution and wastewater collection functions. • Assist the Director of Public Utilities with planning and organizing the water division. • Assist in the preparation of a budget for the division. • Represent the water and wastewater division at various City meetings and address public complaints. • Compile reports regarding water and wastewater and provide information to the public and outside agencies. • Handle personnel difficulties that lead workers and supervisors cannot manage. • Provide technical assistance and consult with other departments on water standards and maintenance. • Supervise and oversee compliance with Federal, State, and local water quality standards. • Assess requests for sewer and water billing adjustments and determine necessary adjustments. • Serve as the department's representative on various City or intergovernmental boards and committees. • Attend meetings dealing with water and wastewater matters such as DEQ, EPA, and Oklahoma Water Resource Board. • Oversee readings on all wells to ensure sufficient water resources for the City. • Schedule monthly water samples and quarterly draw downs to maintain compliance with DEQ. • Plan projects for replacing water and sewer lines. • Direct the proper draining and filling of city water towers to minimize potential issues. • Analyze water/sewer systems and identify problems to determine optimum solutions. Requirements • Considerable knowledge of water distribution and sewer collection systems. • Knowledge of construction requirements for water, sewer, and pumping stations. • Understanding of hazards and precautions associated with trench work and water/sewer line construction. • Familiarity with State and Federal regulations regarding installation and maintenance of water and sewer collection systems. • Knowledge of water quality laws, water sampling methods, and regulations. • Ability to respond to emergency calls 24 hours per day.
