Employment Standards Two (2) years of experience in skilled gas and electric welding plus one year in minor repair of gas- and diesel-powered heavy equipment; OR, Two (2) years of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Equipment Mechanic I with Santa Barbara County plus six semester units in welding technology. A minimum of one year of additional experience in welding may be substituted for the required coursework; OR, A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Class A Driver's License during the probationary period. Knowledge of: tools and methods of the welding trade, including brazing, soldering, electrical, and arc welding; the operation, minor repair, and preventive maintenance of gas- and diesel-powered construction equipment; and safety practices related to welding and equipment repairs. Ability to: read, interpret, and work from blueprints and technical manuals; design, fabricate, and repair a variety of metal work; estimate costs and materials; maintain simple records; perform minor repair and maintenance on a variety of diesel-powered heavy equipment; operate a variety of construction equipment; and work cooperatively with others. Additional Information: Once an incumbent has obtained the Class A license, he/she will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to being assigned work requiring such a license; once assigned, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.
