This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities. As part of a hardworking team of Machinists, NC Programmers, and Technicians, you will set up, operate, and maintain world-class CNC machines to fabricate components for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of CNC machining and fabrication. Special Mentions • Relocation provided • Shifts available: to be adjusted per posting • Interviews may include a technical assessment Responsibilities Of This Role Include • Execute low to medium-complexity machining tasks while upholding quality and workmanship standards. • Document processes and best practices to ensure repeatability and contribute to team knowledge. • Troubleshoot technical problems and collaborate with programming and engineering teams to mitigate and resolve potential risks. • Perform set-ups for mid-to-high complexity jobs using both manual and automated methods (e.g., indicators, edge finders, machine probes). • Operate CNC machine tools, executing tasks and making adjustments to produce conforming hardware that meets engineering requirements. • Suggest ideas and collaborate with the team to develop solutions for process improvements. • Comply with all safety, quality, and company policies, while demonstrating Blue Origin's Leadership Principles. Minimum Qualifications • Passion for our mission: Millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. • Minimum of five (5) years of related CNC machining experience. • Minimum of one (1) year of manual machine experience. • Ability to interpret standard engineering drawings and a developing understanding of GD&T. • Proficiency with shop math, including trigonometry, for calculating machine adjustments and verifying dimensions. • Demonstrated ability to select and manage appropriate tooling for various materials and operations. • Proven ability to hold machining tolerances within +/- .001”. • A developing ability to perform set-ups for mid-to-high complexity tasks. • A developing understanding of advanced machine controls (e.g., Heidenhain, Siemens, Mazatrol) and the ability to interpret commonly used G/M codes. • Ability to determine and use appropriate measuring equipment for moderately complex inspection scenarios. • A developing understanding of manufacturing interfaces such as heat treat, welding, EDM, and grinding. Preferred Qualifications • Experience machining nickel-based alloys, stainless steel, or other superalloys. • Experience with Mazak, DMG Mori, Haas, Okuma, or Mori Seiki machines. • Specific experience with multi-axis (5-axis) machining centers. • Experience machining large-scale components. • Familiarity with documenting and standardizing production processes. • Familiarity with CAM software (e.g., Siemens NX, Mastercam) and G-code editing. • Experience with machining simulation software (e.g., Vericut). • Experience operating heavy lifting equipment such as cranes and forklifts. • A.S. degree in a related technical field or graduation from a machinist trade school. Job Description: What We Need Seattle Pacific University’s Engineering program is seeking a Machinist in Residence , a unique instructor position designed to support the teaching and learning mission of the Mechanical Engineering program. Appointed as a "Machinist in Residence," this role combines operational leadership in our machine shop with hands-on instruction and mentorship of students. We are looking for an individual — whether early in their career or highly experienced — who is passionate about teaching in their area of expertise, high level student learning, and fostering a collaborative, Christ-centered educational environment. What You’ll Do • Teach and mentor students: Serve as an instructor and mentor by teaching a one-credit introductory course on machine tool use each quarter (or as needed). Provide ongoing instruction, coaching, and hands-on training in machining techniques, tool use, safety practices, and design thinking. Empower students to develop practical engineering skills and foster a learning environment that emphasizes creativity, precision, and problem-solving. • Supervise and guide student projects: Work closely with students as they design and fabricate components, providing detailed feedback on blueprints and concepts. Advise on design feasibility, material selection, cost considerations, and fabrication techniques to help students achieve high-quality results in their individual and team projects. • Maintain and operate the Giaimo Mechanical Engineering Lab (machine shop): Sustain a safe, functional, and welcoming workspace that supports student learning. Ensure all equipment and tools are operationa and properly maintained. Establish clear safety protocols and demonstrate best practices to students in a hands-on setting. • Support additional labs and instructional spaces: Assist with the Digital Fabrication and 3D Printing Lab, integrating these resources into teaching and project-based learning. Support students and faculty in using digital manufacturing tools and encourage exploration of new fabrication techniques. • Develop instructional materials and resources: Create and update training materials, instructional guides, and safety documentation to enhance the learning experience and ensure consistent, high-quality instruction for all students using the shop. • Manage shop resources: Oversee shop budget and inventory, order supplies, maintain records, and plan strategically to support evolving instructional and project needs. • Collaborate and contribute: Partner with faculty to align shop instruction with course objectives and departmental goals. Participate in mission-aligned initiatives, department meetings, and special projects that strengthen the engineering learning community. What You’ll Bring • Required : • Bachelor’s degree with at least three years of relevant full-time experience, or at least ten years of directly applicable full-time experience. • Experience advising/teaching/training on machine shop equipment for metal fabrication (mills, lathes, welding, and associated equipment). • Strong commitment to safety and quality. • Ability to work independently, manage workload, and troubleshoot effectively. • Professional demeanor, positive attitude, and strong interpersonal, teaching and leadership skills. • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds and navigate stairs and ladders while carrying supplies or equipment. • A maturing and contagious Christian faith, enthusiasm about supporting SPU's mission , alignment with the University's Statement of Faith , and willingness to accept the lifestyle standards of the Christian community. • Preferred : • Experience managing a machine shop. • Experience designing and fabricating prototypes, complex lab equipment, or mechanical/electronic components. • Proficiency with SolidWorks or other CAD/CAM software. • Experience maintaining and teaching/advising on digital manufacturing tools and electronic equipment. • High proficiency with Microsoft Office and similar software tools. • Enjoyment of and experience working with a diverse range of people.
