Job Profile The company is searching for an HVAC Mechanic who will assemble, install, service, and repair air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating units used in homes, schools, commercial, and industrial buildings. Reports to the Foreman; assigned duties according to specific procedures/work is checked frequently. Education Level • High School or equivalent Work Experience • 1 to 4 years of experience in the specified skill (depending on the mechanic level) • Advanced knowledge of industrial/commercial HVAC systems Duties/Responsibilities • Connects control panels to a power source • Connects motors to control panels and balances motors to ensure efficient operation • Cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe or duct fittings, using hand tools and power tools • Diagnose causes of equipment breakdowns • Locates and marks the position of pipe or duct connections and passage holes for the same in walls and floors, using a ruler, a spirit level, and a plumb bob • Look at flat drawings or pictures and visualize how they would look as solid objects with height, width, and depth • May drill holes to mount units and lift parts into position • May install and maintain solar heating and cooling units • May measure windows or other existing openings, or cut through walls, using a mallet, cold chisel, or other tools to install new units • May weld holding fixtures to steel structural members • Perform a variety of duties that may change often • Rate information using measurable standards • Studies building plans and working drawings to determine the work aids required and the sequence of installations • Test parts with appropriate instruments, disassemble and assemble parts, and make necessary repairs • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy • Perform additional assignments per the supervisor’s direction Skills/Knowledge/Abilities • Advanced skill with HVAC diagnostic tools • Applicant/employee must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace • Job site safety requirements as required by the client (clean shaven, long sleeves, steel toe boots, etc.) • Most sites will require HVAC certification • Post-offer drug/alcohol screen and physical evaluation • Safety equipment as required by the client (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, respirator, hearing protection, safety harness with lanyard, etc.) • Written pre-employment qualification test Work Environment • May be required to do the following: climbing ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above and below ground level; maintaining balance on ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc.; reaching in all directions; handling and manipulating objects and materials; coordinating the movements of eyes, hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; lifting 30 to 50 pounds from ground level, waist level, or overhead; carrying objects, tools, equipment, etc.; standing/sitting; walking; pushing; pulling; bending; kneeling; crouching/squatting; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction; wearing respirator and other PPE; typing/data entry; stepstool use; work in excessive heat; work in excessive cold; work in loud environment. Job Description PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Provides direction, teaching, and support for HVAC course objectives and contributes to the educational environment of the Lone Star College System and the community.
