HVAC Commercial Design Engineer

Description: Johnstone Supply- The Heartland Group is looking for a HVAC Commercial Design Engineer out of our Bloomington, MN office! This person will identify and analyze our customers needs by developing and proposing recommended HVAC systems and design solutions, while also providing technical engineering expertise to our commercial customers and sales team. Essential Job Responsibilities: • Respond to initial customer inquiries to investigate their HVAC needs. Discuss the specific customer requests and provide an overview of the general approach to be taken to resolve their needs. Response to customer inquiries may be with sales personnel or performed independently. • Design HVAC systems for a wide variety of buildings and processes including offices, laboratories, manufacturing spaces, warehouses, etc. Designs will be performed per industry standard practice to meet the customers’ needs, and per regulatory requirements. Design activities will include heating and cooling load calculations performed on a computer program, air distribution design, boiler/chiller systems design, pump and piping design, steam system design, system choices, controls performance sequence definition, and miscellaneous components. • Prepare and present customer quotes. In coordination with the sales team or independently, follow up on quotes to close the sale. • Prepare and assemble construction drawings and arrange plan reviews as appropriate. • Support sales team’s engineering needs as required. • Gather information on customers’ existing HVAC systems and project requirements. • Coordinate and collaborate with customers and stakeholders to integrate HVAC systems seamlessly into commercial building designs. • Design and layout HVAC systems for commercial projects, ensuring compliance with local building codes and regulations. • Prepare accurate and detailed HVAC drawings, schematics, and specifications using industry-standard software. • Select and recommend appropriate HVAC equipment based on project specifications, energy efficiency, and client needs. • Provide technical support to project teams during the construction phase, addressing any design-related issues that may arise. • Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and advancements in HVAC design. • Ensure that all HVAC designs meet environmental and energy efficiency standards. Sales Results and Responsibilities: • Position Johnstone products and services as a strategic advantage to customers. • Communicate the Johnstone value proposition and business drivers. • Establish and expand relationships with decision-makers within key accounts. Develop new customers and contacts to expand customer base. • Provides sales support to outside sales and inside sales representatives whenever necessary to develop new accounts, expand existing accounts, and “close” business. • Perform joint sales calls with the sales team to grow new and existing customer base. • Represents Johnstone Supply at trade associations, events and local chapters. Education and Experience: Required: • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. • Valid state license for HVAC design. • Proven experience in designing HVAC systems for commercial projects. 6 plus years preferred • Proficiency in using industry-standard design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit). • Strong knowledge of local building codes and regulations related to HVAC systems. • Excellent communication and collaboration skills. • Detail-oriented with a focus on delivering high-quality design recommendations. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Preferred: • College degree OR equivalent combination of education and experience. • 6 Years of HVAC Installation or Service experience. • Direct Sales experience in the business-to-business HVAC/R industry. • Strong focus on sales planning and implementation. HVAC Tech

PURPOSE: This position is responsible for the preventative maintenance, service, testing and repairs on HVAC systems and related equipment, perform testing, maintenance and repairs to MOA building systems and life safety equipment, while providing a memorable shopping and entertainment experience. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: • Perform preventative maintenance, service and repairs on HVAC equipment within MOA • Perform testing, repairs and calibrations on all MOA Building Systems equipment. • Perform maintenance and repairs on commercial HVAC units. • Change filters and belts on commercial HVAC units. • Utilize Building Management (BMS) to monitor and adjust temperature, set points to maintain building temperatures. • Troubleshoot and respond to calls concerning life and fire safety, fire sprinkler system, water, gas and with the ability to locate the affected equipment. • Collect information on water and natural gas usage by property and tenants. • Ability to install, monitor, and maintain HVAC Lighting, System Controls and equipment. • Respond to the needs of MOA team members, leader and MOA tenant, regarding building HVAC systems, operation, and maintenance. • Ensure the overall safety of the immediate work area and surrounding work areas, as well as adhering to safety protocols and regulations while perform HVAC. • Ensure Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures are followed, and safety is maintained during LOTO. • Work a flexible schedule including rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. • Assist other departments as needed. • Additional duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Must be at least 18 years of age. • High school diploma or equivalent, required. • Attending or graduate of 2-year Trade, Vocational, or Technical program in commercial industrial refrigeration, air conditioning service and operation, preferred. • Certification in refrigerant recovery, preferred. • 1-3 years’ experience in commercial/industrial HVAC systems, preferred. • Previous electrical safety knowledge. • Able to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and other technical documents. • Basic computer skills. • Good verbal and written communication skills. • Working knowledge of the safe handling and operation of tools, equipment and materials used in HVAC + electrical maintenance and repairs. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the team member will continuously be required to talk and listen to machines and environment in order to understand maintenance needs and communicate a solution with other team members. Team member must also possess a level of hearing that will allow them to be aware of their surroundings, including hearing alarms, radios, and sounds from machine troubleshooting.
