HVAC Service Technician

Overview This position is for an experienced HVAC Service Technician familiar with the repair and maintenance of commercial and industrial HVAC installations. This includes VAVs, boilers, air-conditioners, furnaces, roof top units, air handling units, chillers, and data cooling equipment. This is a HVAC Service Technician position in EC&D’s service department. This position is full time. At EC&D we are equipped to solve a wide variety of HVAC mechanical and control system problems: from minor repairs to installation and maintenance of the industry’s most sophisticated equipment and temperature control systems. The BAS precisely controls the HVAC equipment and interfaces to other systems in a commercial building. It is also the owner’s interface to these controls via a graphical user interface that is accessible locally onsite or through remote login. The BAS also provides building schedules, alarms and trends. Job Details & Responsibilities Keep accurate maintenance logs and complete field service reports with accuracy. Provide exceptional, professional customer support to the EC&D customers. Install, maintain and repair heating ventilation and cooling units for commercial, municipal, education and healthcare customers. Travel to job sites in service area, and work with dispatch to ensure schedule is maintained and delays are properly communicated to customer. Be available to work nights or weekends, on a rotating basis, to service emergency needs of our customers. Maintain good working order of company vehicle as necessary, reporting any mechanical issues and filling out and submitting monthly vehicle inspection form. Vehicles should be washed on a regular basis. Maintain proper stock, parts, tools and safety equipment in the vehicle. Work well with others. Communicate clearly with customers to relay pertinent information for a good working relationship. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Experience: HVAC system installation and start-up experience. Commercial/Industrial HVAC Service Experience. Competencies: Thorough knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical control systems including programming experience for HVAC and BAS systems required. Ability to review, understand and analyze all types of mechanical drawings, engineered control drawings, specifications, wiring and sequences. The right candidate will have excellent technical skills and outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. The person must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Position Details Position Information Position Title HVAC Technician Location Appleton Department Facility Operations Position Type Staff Position Description & Qualifications Position Focus: The HVAC Technician will be responsible for the operational efficiency of HVAC systems across campus, with a primary focus on preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs, particularly for chillers, boilers, refrigeration units, and associated components. The technician will play a key role in maintaining, repairing, and upgrading HVAC systems to ensure optimal performance and safety. Key Duties and Responsibilities: • Perform regular preventive maintenance on a wide range of HVAC systems including pneumatic controls, air handling units, valves, refrigeration equipment (coolers/freezers). • Ensure all HVAC systems are maintained in peak operating condition to avoid system failures and optimize efficiency. • Identify mechanical and HVAC system malfunctions using diagnostic tools and techniques. • Perform system repairs in a timely and efficient manner to minimize system • Purchase necessary parts and equipment for HVAC system maintenance and repairs. • Oversee and assist in the installation of new equipment and system components, • Diagnose complex HVAC issues and determine the best course of action for repairs. • Perform repairs such as part replacement, welding, brazing, and other mechanical procedures to restore HVAC systems to full functionality. • Conduct regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of boilers, with a particular focus on high efficiency boiler models. • Ensure all boiler systems operate efficiently and meet safety standards. • Maintain an organized inventory of HVAC parts, tools, and equipment. • Ensure the availability of necessary replacement components for timely repairs and maintenance. • Maintain and organize HVAC-related equipment rooms, ensuring they are safe, well-stocked, and optimized for operational efficiency. • Assist in training and supervising student workers and other mechanics. • Provide hands-on guidance and technical instruction to ensure that all work meets high standards. • Other duties as assigned Required Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications: Experience: • A minimum of 5-7 years of hands-on HVAC service experience in industrial and commercial settings, with demonstrated expertise in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex HVAC systems. Metasys experience a bonus. Journeyman Status: • Certification as a journeyman HVAC technician, reflecting extensive experience with industrial and commercial HVAC systems, and a deep technical background in system maintenance. Refrigerant License: • A refrigerant handling license is preferred, or the ability to obtain one if necessary. This is essential for working with refrigerants in cooling systems. Pipe Fitting: • Preferred experience in pipe fitting, useful for tasks involving system installations or modifications to piping and ductwork. Physical Requirements: • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in various conditions, including confined spaces, heights, and outdoor environments. Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will possess a combination of technical expertise, hands-on mechanical skills, and problem-solving ability. The technician should be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, collaborating with other technicians, and contributing to the training and development of student workers. This individual should demonstrate a proactive approach to maintenance and troubleshooting, ensuring all HVAC systems function efficiently and safely.
