Role Overview: The Electronic/Electrical Technologist will be responsible for: • Assembling electrical and electronic systems and prototypes. Building, calibrating, and repairing electrical instruments or testing equipment. Running tests, diagnostics, and calibrations. • Ability to design or assist in the layout design process, order the necessary parts and equipment for the project and either perform the installations or assist in the installation process. Must ensure all circuits and parts are correctly installed and function as intended. • Performing product control and system evaluations. Ability to inspect a design plan, evaluate an electrical system and its components or actively test electronic equipment and provide recommendations or repairs. • Knowing how to test circuits using diagnostic tools, creating solutions and having the ability to complete basic repair work. Performing preventative maintenance to ensure the electrical systems are always up-to-date and safe. Expected to keep detailed documentation on all the systems and equipment worked on. May be tasked with creating a user manual, updating a maintenance log or providing regular reports on the tasks completed. • May sometimes visit construction sites in order to observe conditions that affect the design and find solutions to problems with a technical design that may be present in the construction of electrical systems. • Building prototypes from plans or rough sketches and testing, assembling, and maintaining circuitry or electronic components per technical manual, engineering instructions, and their knowledge of electronics. • Replacing or adjusting defective circuitry and electronic components, when necessary, as well as making parts, like terminal boards, bench lathes, or other tools. • Reading schematic drawings, blueprints and engineering instructions for assembling electronic units, as well as writing reports. • Providing technical support for computers, specialized testing systems, communications equipment, navigational equipment, laboratory testing equipment and other electrical and electronic equipment. • Validating test equipment in the R&D Laboratories and discussing needed upgrades and support. Will need to be very knowledgeable with computers, software, and some programming, and circuit reading and documenting. May also be involved in deployment of equipment for automation. • Must understand calibration equipment, (load cell, Vishay) understand and analyze data from multiple specialized test systems in the collecting and analyzing data throughout the state on Indiana’s infrastructure for data driven decision-making. Data results are used by Central Office Divisions and all six Districts in scoping, designing, and programming pavement and bridge projects. • May be required to provide electronic related training in various areas such as testing, construction, research principles, data collection techniques, calibration of testing equipment, etc. Will work with a wide variety of testing equipment with other offices/districts. • Will need to be able to make necessary solder joints and make necessary circuits. Location: This position is in INDOT's West Lafayette Research & Development, Tippecanoe County Salary: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $70,122.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows: • Design basic circuitry and draft sketches to clarify details of design documentation, build prototypes from rough sketches or plans, assemble, test, and maintain circuitry or electronic components according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, and knowledge of electronics, adjust and replace defective circuitry and electronic components, and make parts, such as terminal boards, by using bench lathes, drills, or other machine tools. • Troubleshoot, design, upgrade, and repair multiple state-of-the-art specialized test systems (e.g., 3D Laser, 3D Ground Penetrating Radar, and Falling Weight Deflectometer) • Install network software/hardware. • Train users on network software/hardware. • Provide problem solving or determination and support to ensure proper escalation during periods of outages. • Provide internal analysis during periods of degraded system performance. • Perform studies to define solutions. • Provide integrated customer report to all users on hardware/software problems. • Attend meetings involving server hardware. • Provide interface with vendor support services and groups. • Assist in the evaluation of vendor products to determine which best meets needs at R&D. • Present information to management regarding purchase of hardware, software, and modem equipment. • Reading and documenting circuits. What You'll Need for Success: You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: • Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology or equivalent experience. • Extensive knowledge of electrical/electronic engineering technology practices and concepts, able to apply in practical applications and problem solving. • Extensive knowledge in electronic field to diagnosis multiple electronic devices and systems. • Ability to read and understand complicated technical manuals and apply in practice • Extensive knowledge of network PC/LAN communications hardware/software. • Extensive knowledge of local area network concepts. • Extensive knowledge of computer programming including computer languages and testing of programs. • Extensive knowledge of most recent technical developments in the hardware field. • Broad knowledge of computers, specialized testing systems, communications equipment, navigational equipment, laboratory testing equipment and other related electrical and electronic equipment. • Ability to read and understand complicated technical manuals on hardware, software, database design and database administration. • Effective communication skills. Journeyman Electrician

Scope of Work: The Journeyperson electrician performs installations, alterations, additions, and/or repairs of electrical systems, conductors, and associated materials and equipment within the commercial and industrial electrical industry. Minimum Requirements: • Education: High school graduate, holder of G.E.D., or equivalent studies/experience. • Experience: Completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship program or six years (12,000 hours) of on-the-job work experience equivalent work experience.
