About The Job To perform skilled journeyman level electrical work in the installation, operation, modification, servicing, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of campus electrical systems and equipment; including high and medium voltage systems, building wiring systems, motors, transformers, variable frequency drives, back-up battery systems, emergency generators, laboratory apparatus, lighting systems; and associated control systems. The work requires knowledge of electrical concepts, principles, methods and codes and a full knowledge of the operational aspects of both electrical equipment and systems. Requires the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and drawings, ability to prepare estimates, plan and manage own projects within allotted budgets; instruct and guide semi-skilled or unskilled assistants. Work is performed on a variety of building systems, sometimes in emergency repair situations. This class must take the necessary safety precautions when working around machines, equipment, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Judgment is required in troubleshooting system problems and in determining methods of repair. Key Responsibilities • OPERATIONS and MAINTENANCE: Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge to effectively operate, maintain, and repair equipment with an emphasis on electrical equipment and associated campus utility systems; manually and with computer controls. Ensure proper operation of all equipment and machinery within the Central Plant, on Campus and at remote facilities as assigned by the Operations Supervisor. Monitor all safety systems associated with the operations of all Central Plant equipment and utility systems. Monitor radio dispatch and off hour telephone functions. Must be proficient in reading and interpreting manufacturer's manuals associated with maintenance repair actions on all equipment and campus electrical utility systems. In this position, the employee will be responsible for safely operating Fleet vehicles to transport tools, equipment, and personnel to various work locations. Required to adhere to all safety regulations and protocols while operating vehicles and equipment. • TESTING: Perform and ensure proper testing and analysis of electrical systems. Maintain all logs and reports related to the testing as required. • TRAINING: Attend and participate in safety and technical trainings. Provide training on the operation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems under normal and emergency conditions. Attend all vendor and professional training classes as assigned by management. Maintain current code and regulatory knowledge, updates procedures, skills and operational knowledge of medium and high voltage electrical equipment and systems as installed, modified or added to the campus and remote facilities. • CLERICAL: Perform related projects, reports, records, and other clerical functions as assigned. Must have basic computer skills related to E-mail, computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), Word, Excel, reporting, and timekeeping. • MISCELLANEOUS: Work as assigned by the supervisor on all areas, including housekeeping and refurbishing the facilities. Will manage individual safety requirements as required by Cal OSHA, UC policy, codes, and regulations. Monitor operating conditions by reading gauges, meters, and automatic recording devices. Qualifications EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS • High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training. • Completion of a state or federally recognized (minimum four-year) apprenticeship in the electrical trade • Five or more years of progressively responsible related experience in commercial, institutional, and/or industrial electrical trade. (Preferred) • Possess and maintain California Electrician Certification with CA. Dept. of Industrial Relations. • Valid California DL or access to reliable means of transportation to successfully meet the travel requirements of the position. Critical Knowledge And Skills • Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge to effectively perform preventive maintenance and repairs to main electrical switchboards, panel boards, etc. with voltage up to 600 volts AC and main bus full load amperage up to 6000. Installs circuits for power, lighting and equipment using various wiring methods (i.e. rigid metal conduits, armored cables). • Demonstrated skill to maintain service, repair, replace, install and alter electrical equipment and distribution systems, and other campus utility systems related to craft functions. • Assists in troubleshooting, repairs and/or installs main switchboards, transformers, main and branch circuits breakers, disconnects and wiring devices such as switches, convenience receptacles and dedicated receptacles. • Troubleshoots or assists in troubleshooting and repair electrical circuits with voltages up to 600 volts AC. • Electrical skill to include the use of electrical measuring meters and knowledge of AC/DC series and series parallel circuits. Ability to detect equipment operational problems, by interpreting readings from meters and gauges. • Diagnoses problems, repair and replace failed lighting systems and controls as well as electromagnetic and electronic ballasts on lighting equipment. • Performs switching on medium voltage distribution systems and access electrical vaults to manually operate medium voltage vacuum interrupter switches and adjust control relay settings. • Requires the ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and plumbing schematics and drawings, to prepare estimates, plan in addition, manage own projects within allotted budgets.
