ELECTRICIAN

Description Job Summary This position performs electrical maintenance and repair functions in support of water, reclaimed water storage and pumping, wastewater treatment, and other department and city operations. Job Responsibilities • Performs maintenance and repairs of all electrical systems at water, reclaimed water storage and pumping, and wastewater treatment plant and lift stations • Performs troubleshooting and repairs on high voltage electrical systems, including motor control centers, switch gears, distribution wiring, motor electrical components, and related equipment. • Performs electrical maintenance and repairs of wastewater plant equipment, water storage and pumping station equipment, and lift station equipment. • Performs electrical system installation, maintenance, and repairs at parks and recreation facilities. • Assists contractors with electrical expertise at any special events. • Works with other City departments or divisions for street lighting, crosswalks, athletic field lighting, and irrigation system installations, maintenance, and repairs. • Creates and maintains preventive and predictive maintenance program routines for motor electrical components, high voltage transformers, breakers, distribution panels, electrical motor control centers, variable frequency drives and soft-starts. • Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call is periodically assigned. • Performs related duties, as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, Skills, and Abilities • Knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical equipment and components. • Knowledge of industrial and commercial electrical principles and practices. • Knowledge of state and national electrical codes. • Knowledge of fire and life safety principles and standards. • Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant and lift station operations, maintenance, and repair principles. • Skills in the operation of computers and job-related software programs. • Skills in working safely around high voltage electrical currents. • Skills in the use of hand and power tools. • Skills in decision making and problem solving. • Skills in both oral and written communication. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Requires some experience in maintenance, repair of electrical systems. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications at the City’s sole discretion. • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL driver’s license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK • The work consists of varied electrical system installations, maintenance, and repair duties. Working at high elevations, in confined spaces, and in the vicinity of high voltage electricity contributes to the complexity of the position. • The purpose of this position is to install, repair, and maintain electrical systems. Success in this position contributes to the provision of the efficiency and effectiveness of department as well as city operations. • Guidelines include state and national electrical codes, safety regulations, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT • Work performed is generally standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light, and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. • Work performed is generally outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather conditions. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and high voltage electricity. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. • The employee must frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. • This is an essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and action to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or man-made). Electrical Technician

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Installs, constructs, maintains, and repairs water distribution, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) system structures, equipment and monitoring devices. EXAMPLES OF WORK Performs construction, maintenance, and repairs on structures, facilities and equipment for the water and sewer collection and distribution system and the WWTFs. Reads blueprints, diagrams, and sketches. Troubleshoots and/or traces electrical circuits in control panels and other equipment; identifies and repairs/replaces defective components. Operates and maintains hand-held manual, electrical, and gas-powered tools and equipment, to include diagnostic instruments, trade specific meters and gauges. Performs records maintenance duties, to include work orders, materials and supplies utilized, cost estimates, labor required, maintenance logs, and fuel logs. Reports any detected deterioration, repair and maintenance needs to supervisor. Assists with the planning, estimating, and coordination of tasks. Uses SCADA program to monitor, evaluate and change station functions. Ensures the availability of emergency power supply from generators; performs maintenance checks. Responds to emergent water and sewer maintenance and repair issues outside of normal duty hours as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience: Associate's Degree in electronics or a related field; supplemented by two (2) years of electronics or electrical experience which provides the ability to perform skilled to advanced skilled tasks in the trade; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid driver license. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) badge. May require a valid Class 'B' commercial driver license (CDL) with Tanker endorsement, depending on assignment; if required, must be obtained within twelve (12) months of employment. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate various hand-held manual, electrical, and gas-powered equipment and tools. Excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations. Must be able to exert 50 to 120 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. This position requires prolonged periods of standing or walking. Requires full range of body motion in manipulation of limbs and torso for working on scaffolding, climbing water tanks, ladders, and/or working in confined spaces. Requires the ability to traverse irregular, uneven, or erratically moving surfaces frequently. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work. Language Ability: Must be able to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record, and exchange information to others. Requires ability to read a variety of moderately complex technical data, policy and procedure manuals, codes. Must be able to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats, and adhering to all rules of grammar, spelling, diction and punctuation. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in situations where limited standardization may exist; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
