Electrician

This position performs electrical maintenance and repair functions in support of water, reclaimed water storage and pumping, wastewater treatment, and other department and city operations. The incumbent of this position may be designated as an “Apprentice Electrician” or “Journeyman Electrician.” • Performs maintenance and repair of all electrical systems at water, reclaimed water storage and pumping, and wastewater treatment plant and lift stations. • Performs troubleshooting and repair on high voltage electrical systems, including motor control centers, switch gears, distribution wiring, motor electrical components, and related equipment. • Performs electrical maintenance and repairs of wastewater plant equipment, water storage and pumping station equipment, and lift station equipment. • Designs and builds control cabinets. • Maintains, tests, and services all standby power generators in the city and maintains service records. • Implements preventive and predictive maintenance programs and routines. • Performs electrical system installation, maintenance, and repair at parks and recreation facilities. • Assists contractors with special event set-ups. • Works with other City departments on street lighting, cross walks, athletic field lighting, and irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair. • Accomplishes preventive and predictive maintenance program routines for motor electrical components, high voltage transformers, breakers, distribution panels, electrical motor control centers, variable frequency drives, and soft-starts. • Determines, establishes, and maintains and appropriately sized and cataloged inventory of spare parts and supplies needed to maintain and quickly repair critical electrical equipment. • Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call. • Maintains electrical and repair records. • Performs related duties. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Apprentice Electrician – Requires some experience in maintenance, repair of electrical systems. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications at the City’s sole discretion. • Journeyman Electrician: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of a Journeyman’s Electrician license. • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION • Knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical equipment and components. • Knowledge of industrial and commercial electrical principles and practices. • Knowledge of state and national electrical codes. • Knowledge of fire and life safety principles and standards. • Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant and lift station operations, maintenance, and repair principles. • Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs. • Skill in working safely around high voltage electrical currents. • Skill in the use of hand and power tools. • Skill in decision making and problem solving. • Skills in oral and written communication. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The designated Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include state and national electrical codes, safety regulations, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK • The work consists of varied electrical system installation, maintenance, and repair duties. Working at high elevations, in confined spaces, and in the vicinity of high voltage electricity contributes to the complexity of the position. • The purpose of this position is to install, repair, and maintenance systems. Success in this position contributes to the provision of the efficiency and effectiveness of department and city operations. CONTACTS • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, vendors, contractors, and members of the general public. • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to provide services. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. • The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and high voltage electricity. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. • The employee must frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. • This is an essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and action to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or man- made).
