Location: Durango, CO Job Summary: The Carpenter I position works within the Car Shop Department to perform interior and exterior wood repair/replacement on rolling stock. Work can include wood framing, sanding, staining, and finishing along with electrical and plumbing repair. Ideal candidates have an aptitude for and some experience working in the carpentry or construction trade and have the ability and desire to hone their skills working on historic structures, cars and other railroad artifacts/material. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Complete structural and finish carpentry work on all rolling stock to include doors, windows, trim, framing and siding • Assist with installation/repair of plumbing, furnaces, generators, AC/DC electrical on passenger coaches • Work with carmen to inspect cars, perform repairs and complete scheduled maintenance • Other duties as assigned Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements: • Ability to follow blueprints and carpentry plans • Experience in woodworking including cabinet, framing and finish work • Aptitude, experience, and ability to use wood working tools (saws, miters, table saws, chop and jig saws, etc.) • Familiarity with audio wiring, residential electrical, residential plumbing and general home-related repair skills, a plus • Other mechanical skills, welding and/or metal working skills, preferred • Ability & desire to perform physically demanding work within a varying work schedule • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass a preemployment drug screening and physical capabilities evaluation. Work Environment: • Working in and around rail yard and within industrial shop environment • Regularly crawl under coaches, work in confined spaces, and work atop ladders • Regular time spent outdoors in all types of weather • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds • Varied schedule with overtime work, weekend or evening shifts, as needed

Installs structures and fixtures, such as windows and molding. Measure, cut, or shape wood, plastic, and other materials. Construct building frameworks, including walls, floors, and door frames. An experienced level Carpenter plans, constructs, installs, and maintains a wide variety of complicated woodwork structures and equipment. Selects materials to meet appearance and specified load requirements. Works from blueprints and rough sketches. Occasionally operates various types of woodworking equipment. May direct work of others.
