Job Code: 3622 UNION: TRADESMEN JOB TITLE: PLUMBER FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT DEPARTMENT: DEPARTMENT OF PARKS, REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BUILDINGS AND RECREATION SCHOOL BUILDINGS MANAGEMENT GRADE: 25.6 POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY: Responsible for the application of journeyman skills and knowledge in installing, altering, and repairing water, gas and sewage disposal system, equipment, appliances, and fixtures in municipal buildings. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with municipal plumbing codes and standard trade practices with inspection during process and upon completion. Work instructions may be oral or written and are accompanied by sketches and drawings necessary. No supervision is exercised over other staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Installs new plumbing such as pipes, valves, drains, basins, tubs, faucets, heaters, lavatories, sinks, toilet facilities, bubblers, coolers, showers, sterilizers, roof drains, tanks, and specialized hospital, dental, kitchen, and laboratory plumbing. • Studies drawings, sketches, and specifications of new installations. May erect scaffolding. Marks, cuts, burrs, bends, threads pipe to desired length and curvature. Screws, bolts, or solders valves, couplings and other specified parts and fittings to pipe sections, and pipe sections to adjoining pipe assemblies. Caulks connections for water tightness and attaches pipe assemblies to walls or ceiling with brackets or hangers. Saws passages for pipes. Connects plumbing fixtures to outlets and inlets by fitting gaskets, coupling, traps and valves. Solders connections to seal joints. • Repairs, tests, alters and maintains existing piping systems and plumbing fixtures. Inspects connections and other parts of system for leaks and pressure losses. Replaces defective pipes and solders or caulks leaks and breaks. Opens clogged drains, traps, and other lines. Replaces work washers or other parts in valve and traps. Repairs or replaces damaged fixtures. • Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, processes and techniques of the plumbing trade. • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade. • Working knowledge of municipal plumbing codes and pertinent state regulations. • Ability to work from written and oral instructions, sketches and drawings. • Ability to supervise the work of an assigned helper. • Ability to diagnose and correct causes of malfunctioning of plumbing equipment. • Skill in the use of tools, equipment and materials of the trade. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is mostly performed in a field environment. Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.
