The Plumbing/Heating Technician will maintain, install, modify, troubleshoot and repair utility, supply and disposal systems, fixtures and equipment such as sewage, gas, water and oil lines, compress air, vacuum and acid systems, water closets, tubs, shower, sinks, water heaters, hydrants, valves, pumps, heating boilers, hot air furnaces and water heaters. The Plumbing and Heating Technician will also work from building plans, blueprints and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall and proper operation of systems and equipment with little or no supervision. Compensation includes an comprehensive benefits package. General Duties and Responsibilities The Plumbing/Heating Technician will install, modify, maintain and repair systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level, and slope and determining and installing valves, traps and unions needed for proper operation of systems; install equipment by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment and seating, hooking up and testing the equipment; operate, maintain and repair heating systems and equipment including replacing defective burners, switches, fuel lines, cutoff assemblies, thermostats, motors, blowers, pilots, radiators and steam traps. Candidates must be able to interpret blueprints and building specifications to map layout for pipes, drainage systems, and other plumbing materials; installs pipes and fixtures, such as sinks and toilets, for water, gas, steam, air, or other liquids; assemble fittings and valves for installation; modifies length of pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing materials as needed for a building; use saws and pipe cutters as necessary. Candidates must also choose plumbing materials based on budget, location, and intended uses of building; follow health and safety standards and complies with building codes; write report documenting the problem and summary of actions taken; perform inspections of plumbing systems to identify and replace worn parts; ensure space is cleaned up after completing work task and respond to call-backs and works overtime as required and assigned. Other duties as assigned or as necessary. Education and Skills A valid State of CT P-1 Journeyman’s license and a preferred 5 years experience as a licensed plumber with a P-1 license in a multi-building work environment prefered. The College will consider a combination of education, experience, licensing and a demonstrated knowledge of skilled plumbing/heating work. Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of principles, methods, materials, tools, equipment, and systems used in the plumbing and heating trades. Ability to estimate labor and material costs, keep simple records and reports, follow oral and written directions, and read and write English; able to work independently with little direction. Candidates are required to maintain a valid driver’s license and posses the tools necessary to perform plumbing functions; knowledge of OSHA and other safety/health requirements; the ability to lift heavy objects, up to 75 lbs. and be able to work at moderate heights.
