Department of Public Works Division of Streets and Bridges is seeking a Mason to perform manual and some semi-skilled labor involving repairs or maintenance in the general construction, repair, and maintenance of city sidewalks, streets, and bridges and other related duties. Performs maintenance and repairs to the City’s bridges, overpasses, underpasses and culverts to ensure compliance with Federal Bridge Inspection Standards The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s Storm Water System, Street Network and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained. Hiring Salary Range: $40,960 - $47,104 (Additional $5,000 CDL Stipend upon obtaining Commercial Driver’s License) Essential functions include but are not limited to: • Performs maintenance and repairs on bridges, overpasses, underpasses, culverts, seawalls and other structures by replacing and repairing concrete and bulkheads, installing concrete embankments, replacing warning signs, repairing bridge decks, girders, pilings, abutments, and damaged guard railings. • Cleaning and painting steel girders and bearings, replacing and sealing bridge expansion joints, compression seals and components. • Repairs and replaces bridges and underpass lights and bridge fender channel navigation lights and units. • Must be able to work in a boat in calm and rough water during day or night. • Uses hand tools and power equipment. • Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and state and federal specifications; performs the necessary tasks according to required standards for dimensions and finish. • Finishes concrete by pouring concrete, raking, floating, troweling, edging, cutting joints, and brooming cement using various equipment and tools. • Builds and designs forms for special projects and shapes concrete for specific jobs. • Performs specialized bridge maintenance by repairing bridge decks, girders, pilings, abutments, replacing damaged railings and guard railings, cleaning and painting steel girders and bearings and joints. • Cleans work site areas and equipment. • Directs and instructs lesser skilled workers as assigned. • Requires physical ability to stand, stoop, and bend. • Must be able to load and unload equipment and lift a maximum of 75 pounds. • Requires ability to understand oral and written instructions. • Must be able to drive City vehicles and light construction equipment. • Requires normal hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception to safely work in areas with high traffic volume. Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. One years experience in masonry, asphalt or concrete. Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s): Must possess Driver’s License. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview. Must obtain a class B commercial driver’s license within six months of employment with the City.
