Rapid Tooling Specialist/CNC Machinist (ONSITE/Research Triangle Park, NC)

Job Description Summary The Rapid Tooling Specialist will demonstrate comprehensive machining techniques to facilitate in-house rapid prototyping tooling, ensuring responses within 24 hours. This involves using in-house printed tooling for final tooling and assembling mold components for prototype part sampling. The candidate must utilize CAD model tooling data to expedite in-house machining techniques, resorting to secondary prints only when necessary. This approach enables rapid machining for our BD Partners, accelerating the delivery of new concept prototype molded parts. The specialist will provide guidance and technical assistance, maintain and record historical tooling models, and process documentation using SolidWorks, Space Claim, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, OneNote, Copilot, and Outlook. They must be adept at problem-solving and self-guided in using correct mold techniques. The specialist will apply appropriate injection molding and machining applications to meet the rapid tooling needs of our BD Partners. Responsibilities include developing accurate final tooling stack heights for mold assembly and performing subtractive machining practices using all shop equipment, such as lathes, grinders, mills, CNC machines, and precision measuring tools. The specialist will also handle material preparation, auxiliary molding equipment, and initial mold start-up for sampling rapid prototype molds. They must understand mold debugging for corrective actions before, during, and after part sampling. The specialist will develop a thorough knowledge of BD engineering-grade resins and their properties and collaborate with outside suppliers, mold engineers, engineering personnel, and BD Partners as required. Job Summary: BD is excited to introduce the role of a Rapid Tooling Mold Specialist, a crucial individual in BD's fast-paced, expanding digital environment. As a team member of our 3DPnP Prototyping Team the rapid tooling specialist will use subtractive machining processes to successfully machine-printed tooling to the final mold dimensions while assembling components for the injection mold. The specialist will use in-house CNC equipment, conventional machining equipment, and CAD model software to rapidly machine final precision tooling solutions. Knowledge of assembly machines, tooling, injection molding, blow molding, die tooling, 3D printing, mold design, and molding press operation is highly advantageous. One's knowledge and background will allow the candidate to transition seamlessly into producing high-quality tooling and mold components needed for prototyping. The rapid tooling specialist's work is fundamental in developing next-generation medical products that significantly impact the BD product portfolio through innovative tooling techniques. The rapid tooling specialist will take direction from the 3DPnP Injection Molding Manager for project-specific priorities regarding mold/ tooling functions while independently working in the TTL in-house prototyping machine shop. The candidate is expected to adapt to the rapid dynamics of the 3DPnP prototyping tooling environment and contribute to the team's efforts to meet the rapid prototyping needs efficiently and with expertise excellence. This allows for in-house rapid machining for our BD Partners to expedite new concepts to deliverable prototype molded parts. • The tooling specialist will also provide guidance and technical assistance by providing and recording the historical tooling models and processing documentation information using Solid Works, Space Claim, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, OneNote, Copilot, and Outlook. • The rapid tooling specialist must be comfortable using tooling problem-solving skills while being self-guided to skillfully use correct mold tooling techniques. Other Duties: • To follow good laboratory practices while observing all BDTI safety and quality standards and maintain laboratory notebooks according to BDT standard operating procedures. • Wear proper safety equipment where and when required. • Actively utilize the 3DPNP database to update Project progress and ongoing jobs and prioritize business unit requests. • Use precision measurement devices (e.g., Keyence Optical, micrometers, gauge blocks, height gauges, indicators, digital calipers, and GOM when needed) to ensure the dimensional accuracy of tooling and molded parts. • Professionally collaborate with BD Partners, customers, suppliers, and outside resources for technical prototyping needs. • Maintain all records, including required paperwork regarding 3DPNP documentation. • Ability to use and understand BD policies and procedures regarding all safety rules and regulations. • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Engineering Manager. Qualifications: • A High School Diploma is required. • An Associate's degree is preferred (Mechanical or Plastics Engineering ect) • Minimum five years related experience is required • Proficient in using three-dimensional CAD solid modeling software packages, preferably SolidWorks or Pro/E (Creo) and possibly Space Claim. • Knowledge and experience in applying various tooling applications regarding injection molding is strongly preferred. • Experience with tooling construction, assembly, and maintenance of assembly equipment is desirable. • Experience with CNC operation and programming, and competencies with standard machining equipment are needed to complete rapid tooling requirements (i.e., CNC, modeling software usage, common machining and work fixturing, lathe, Bridgeport mill, grinder, and possible polishing) • Strong mechanical ability with high attention to detail. • Proficient in using three-dimensional CAD solid modeling software packages, preferably SolidWorks or Pro/E (Creo) and possibly Space Claim. • Knowledge and experience in applying various tooling applications regarding injection molding is strongly preferred. • Experience with tooling construction, assembly, and maintenance of assembly equipment is desirable. • Experience with CNC operation and programming and competencies with standard machining equipment are needed to complete 24-hour rapid tooling requirements (i.e., CNC, part modeling integration, and manipulation of CAD software).
