About the Role The CNC machinist position is responsible for supporting CNC machining and other related manufacturing activities at the Center for Manufacturing Advancement. You will track and report CNC lab inventory, including shop supplies, raw materials, cutting tools, etc. You will also set-up and operate CNC equipment including but not limited to multi-axis milling machines, mill/turn machines, dual spindle lathes, tool pre-setters, vertical and horizontal band saws, etc. The CNC Machinist will work with CMA operations manager and CMA CNC technologist to document procedures and technical processes. You will also perform basic preventative maintenance on CNC equipment including coolant maintenance, machine calibrations, etc. You will work with CMA staff and external stakeholders and technology partners to complete machining projects in a timely manner. You are expected to maintain a safe and orderly working environment and perform other duties as assigned. Shift Details This position is assigned to second shift and may be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, or alternate shifts as needed to meet business demands. Second shift hours are Monday - Thursday - 2:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. Duties & Responsibilities: • Setup and operate CNC equipment including but not limited to multi-axis milling machines, Dual spindle lathes, Wire EDM, tool pre-setters, vertical band saws, etc. • Conduct pre-process, in-process and post-process inspections using 3D scanners, basic precision hand tools and gauges • Comply with data privacy and standard requirements including ITAR, ISO, ANSI, etc. • Work with CMA operations manager and CMA CNC technologist to document procedures and technical processes • Perform basic preventative maintenance on CNC equipment including coolant maintenance, machine calibrations, etc. • Perform CAD/CAM duties using Autodesk Fusion 360 and Siemens NX to support CNC operations • Work with CMA staff and external stakeholders and technology partners to complete machining projects in a timely manner • Maintain safe and orderly working environment • Perform other related duties as required Where will you work? The Ideal Candidate • An associates degree or diploma in Precision Machining Technology or equivalent work experience required • Must have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in setting up complex CNC operations • Experience in ITAR work environment preferred • Proficient with Microsoft Office products • Comprehensive knowledge of precision machining • Extensive CNC experience including multi-axis machining, dual spindle lathes, mill/turn, etc. • CAD/CAM experience and knowledge preferred • Must demonstrate good communication skills, oral and written. • Must be customer service oriented and possess excellent interpersonal skills. • Must be detail-oriented, organized, and possess the ability to multi-task and troubleshoot in a multi-faceted work environment. Duties & Responsibilities: • Independently set up, program, and operate multi-axis milling machines, dual-spindle lathes, mill/turn centers, Wire EDM, and other advanced CNC equipment. • Create, optimize, and validate CNC programs using Autodesk Fusion 360, Siemens NX, or comparable CAD/CAM software with little to no technical support. • Design and document advanced machining processes, including toolpath optimization, workholding strategies, and process standardization for repeatability and efficiency. • Perform detailed first-article, in-process, and final inspections using CMMs, 3D scanners, and precision metrology tools. Lead root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions when quality issues arise. • Diagnose and resolve complex machine, tool, and process issues. Conduct advanced preventative maintenance, machine calibrations, and recommend upgrades to improve performance. • Provide technical support, training, and guidance to junior machinists and apprentices, helping build team skill levels. • Lead projects to improve cycle times, reduce scrap, and enhance process capability. • Ensure strict adherence to ITAR, ISO, and ANSI requirements. Maintain detailed documentation for audits and process traceability. • Work with CMA staff, engineers, and external stakeholders to deliver machining projects on schedule and within specification. • Promote and uphold a culture of safety and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
