Electric Utility Electrician

Description The Department - Silicon Valley Power (SVP): Silicon Valley Power currently provides over 40 percent of Santa Clara’s electricity from carbon-free renewable resources. In addition to using green energy from large-scale wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric projects outside of the area, SVP employs innovative ways to locally produce electricity by capturing and burning methane gas from a closed city landfill and using power from solar generating systems on city-owned garages and vacant, unusable land. The Position: The position of Electric Utility Electrician performs inspections and maintenance on equipment in SVP substations. This equipment includes but is not limited to, power transformers, instrument and control transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, relays and ancillary control systems. SVP substation equipment is rated at 12,000 volts and above. Electric Utility Electricians provide after hours emergency response to events that impact substation equipment. The annual salary range for this position is $162,470.28 - $207,554.04. This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum Education Requirements: • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.; Minimum Experience Requirements: • Status as a journey level electrician, including proof of certification as a journey level electrician; or proof of completion of a formal electrician apprenticeship; or proof of completion of a formal electrician or equivalent training program; and • Experience maintaining high voltage substation equipment, power generation equipment or industrial manufacturing facilities is required. Acceptable Substitution: None. License/Certifications: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment. Desirable Qualifications: Journey level experience maintaining solid state traffic signal equipment. Other Requirements: • Incumbents of this classification may be required to work shifts, weekends, and odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties, and be available for emergency and/or pre-arranged work whenever called upon. • Incumbents may be required to work in inclement weather. • Incumbents will be required to travel from site to site and work occasionally at a considerable height above the ground. • Applicants appointed to this position must possess normal color vision at time of appointment. • Incumbents of this classification may be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations. • Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment. Job Title: Electrical Technician Job Description As an Electrical Technician, you will be responsible for conducting, maintaining, testing, and repairing electrical/electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems and components. You will apply your knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical principles to determine equipment malfunctions and restore equipment to operation. You will provide skilled electrical/electronic support to all areas, ensuring efficient and safe operations. Responsibilities • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical equipment, including programmable logic controllers, power supplies, motor starters, frequency drives, sensors, and gauges. • Provide emergency and unscheduled repairs of production equipment and perform scheduled maintenance during machine service. • Advise operators and line mechanics on safe operation procedures for electrical/electronic and mechanical equipment. • Inform management and line mechanics of potential electrical/mechanical problems and inherent dangers. • Maintain performance and maintenance records for identified equipment. • Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service. • Recommend spare parts and materials needed for inventory. • Document and maintain daily paperwork in a timely manner. • Assist maintenance personnel with technical troubleshooting. • Comply with OSHA Safety, NEC, FDA, GMPs, HACCP food safety, and health rules. • Help develop best practices, processes, and training as needed. • Provide good customer service and perform other duties as assigned or needed. Essential Skills • Basic understanding of electrical symbols, drawings, and schematics. • Knowledge of AC/DC electrical theory, including Ohm's Law. • Proficient use of electrical test equipment such as DMM, Amp meter, and probes. • Ability to identify and understand components like contactors, sensors, drives, and overloads. • Knowledge of wiring, conduit, and NEC code. • Ability to work on AC/DC low voltage circuits and troubleshoot basic PLC I/O. • Basic electrical troubleshooting for motors, VFD drives, and other control devices. • Ability to perform calibration configuration for drives, transducers, and sensors. • Strong organizational and communication skills. • Ability to work in a team environment and with external partners.
