Position Title: Carpenter Job Category: University Staff Employment Type: Regular Job Profile: Carpenter Job Duties: Position Summary Statement This position is responsible for the performance of carpentry tasks listed below at a journeyman level for new, remodel and repair projects for the University in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Applicant must be able to build, service, and maintain all types of structures, accessories and related components, interpret codes and blueprints and use of all of the tools and machines of the trade in a safe and knowledgeable manner. Employee shift is 7 am - 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities 50% A. New construction, remodeling and alterations A1. Constructs and installs all types of carpentry related components, such as walls, floors, ceilings, partitions, cabinets, shelving, roofs, doors, window moldings, trim, counter tops, catwalks A2 Installs building components, such as blocks, tiles, bricks, metal studs, drywall, beams, supports, posts, metal windows, equipment, etc. A3 Installs and finishes concrete for floors, walks, footings, walls, planters, etc. A4 Installs materials used for insulating and weather-stripping of doors, windows, walls, ceilings, roofs, etc. A5 Installs hardware for hollow metal and aluminum doors, windows, etc., installs built in appliances and equipment A6 Install joint treatment, mud and taping of new drywall systems, patch drywall and plaster finishes 30% B. Maintenance and repair of existing building components B1 Maintains and repairs all walls, ceilings and floors, such as wood, block, brick, plaster, drywall, floor tiles, ceramic tile, acoustical tile B2 Maintains and repairs all wooden components, such as doors, windows, frames, dividers, bleachers, cabinets, signs, panels, etc. B3 Maintains and repairs hardware items, such as door closers, locksets, exit devices, screens, chalkboards, bulletin boards, partitions, door butts, hinges, etc. B4 Maintains and repairs roofs including shingled, built-up and metal B5 Maintains and repairs masonry components, such as walks, walls, floors, pools, etc. B6 Inspect and repair fire door assembly components including doors, frames and hardware 20% C. Associated Duties C1 Fabricates items and parts for special needs, such as window sash door trim, wood molds, screens, cabinets, etc. C2 Assists in the ordering and storekeeping of all supplies and parts in the trade C3 Is in charge of maintaining all tools and machines used in the carpentry trade C4 Insures that all projects are in accordance with all codes and regulations C5 Assists and instructs repair workers on projects and minor repairs of equipment and buildings C6 Insures that all safety procedures are followed when using machines and on job sites C7 Comply with recognized environmental health and safety practices C8 Use campus email and internet programs for communication, information, time keeping, work order system as needed to compliment campus protocol C9 A valid Wisconsin Driver License is required for the operation of a state-licensed vehicle C10 Coordinate projects with other trades to complete in a safe and timely manner C11 Read and interpret blue prints and shop drawings C12 Generate and order materials for building projects C13 Assist with project cost estimates and schedules Key Job Responsibilities: • Interprets blueprints and drawings to determine specifications and to calculate the materials and equipment required. Discusses project plan with customer/client • Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs • Performs skilled carpentry work according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes • Reviews finished projects with client/customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations • Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations Department: Facilities Management is the division of UW-Eau Claire responsible for the operation and maintenance of 29 major buildings, 177 acres of developed land, and 186 acres of undeveloped land. Facilities Management is made up of several different sub- units including Material and Supply Store, Surplus Store, Mail Services, Grounds Maintenance, Building Trades Shops (Carpentry, Controls, Electrical, Lock, Mechanical, Paint, Plumbing), Capital Equipment Inventory, Custodial Services, Heating Plant, and Vehicle Maintenance Shop. Required Qualifications: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Carpenter; or full journey status as a Carpenter in a union; or four years applicable work experience. Possession of a valid WI Drivers and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy to drive a state vehicle. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of all methods, procedures, practices and tools of the Carpenter trade. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and written specifications as they pertain to the Carpentry Trade. Knowledgeable of State, local building codes, and life safety codes. The Building Maintenance & Carpentry Tech is primarily responsible for Building Maintenance and Carpentry projects within the offices.
