Duties/Responsibilities: • Measures, marks, and arranges materials to established layout based on blueprints or instructions from supervisors. • Cuts and shapes structures, forms, or other fixtures from wood, plastic, fiberglass, or drywall. • Uses various hand and power tools to securely build assigned projects. • Joins materials with the most appropriate nail, screw, staple, or adhesive. • Ensures the accuracy of work by checking completed projects with tools such as levels, surveying equipment, or framing squares; corrects problems as needed. • Creates wooden forms for pouring concrete or for tunnels, bridges, or sewer construction projects. • Erects and dismantles scaffolding. • Installs windows and doors. • Adheres to local building and safety codes and guidelines. • Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Skills/Abilities: • Ability to understand directions and read blueprints. • Ability to solve mathematical problems quickly and accurately. • Ability to properly care for and use tools of the trade. • Thorough understanding of carpentry principles and methods. • Works well as part of a team. Education and Experience: • Successful completion of vocational school or technical college or apprenticeship program; and at least three years of experience via on-the-job training required. Physical Requirements: • Prolonged periods standing, climbing, bending, and kneeling. • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time. • Must be able to safely work with sharp tools or power equipment. • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and terrains. • Must have manual dexterity, a good sense of balance, and excellent hand-eye coordination.

Carpenter, Newcomb Zone

We have an exciting opportunity for a Carpenter to support Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost effective, and reliable carpentry repairs to properties and infrastructure in Newcomb Zone. This position will provide renovation, construction and maintenance services to the University community, including critical repair, restoration and renovation of University historic structures. The incumbent performs work of moderate difficulty with responsibilities for constructing, installing, and repairing structures of wood, plywood, wall boards, sheet metal and other building materials, including historic building materials that require special attention to detail for repair work. The Carpenter performs other miscellaneous duties such as lock installation and repair, replacing glass and ceiling and floor tiles, and other building trade related duties. The successful candidate will demonstrate positive communication skills interfacing directly with faculty, staff and customers. Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,100 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties. Duties include: • Provide framing, door, window, and hardware repairs. Repair, install, and finish millwork, casework, or other wood products. • Working skill in the use of a variety of diagnostic tools, instruments, equipment, hand, and power tools. • Working knowledge of performing maintenance in residential occupied spaces. • Maintain accurate records on CMMS and Timecards. • Ability to respond to urgent repair needs outside of normal working hours. • Attend safety meetings, classes, and training seminars as directed by the supervisor to keep informed of safety issues and safe working practices. • Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate. • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. • Work productivity in a team environment to complete projects and assigned tasks. • Providing event support as assigned. • Ability to be on an on-call rotation • In addition to the above more Job responsibilities may be assigned. Required Qualifications: • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. • Experience: At least four years of experience in carpentry and woodworking; 7 years preferred. • Licensure: Valid Driver's license with a zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving history. Physical Demands: Employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). Employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell. Anticipated Compensation: $24.50 - $28.50. per hour ($50,960 - $59,280 annually); dependent on experience and qualifications. This is a non-exempt-level, benefited position.
