GENERAL DUTIES: • Welds metal components together to fabricate or repair products, such as machine parts, plant equipment, range targets, mobile homes, and generators, according to layouts, blueprints or work orders, using brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment. • Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements. • Have good dexterity and attention to detail, as well as technical knowledge about the materials being joined and best practices in the field. • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead. • The ability to test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws. • Must have an understanding of metals and their properties so the best combinations can be used to enhance the life of the final product. • Ability to read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures. Job Requirements: OTHER DUTIES: May be required to perform housekeeping duties to assigned work areas. May be required to have a Class A CDL. May be required to handle hazardous material and/or collect hazardous waste. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must have completed vocational or military training in welding fundamentals and skills and have at least seven years of welding experience. Job InformationResponsibilities • Under general supervision lays out and performs all types of welding on gas piping and equipment, structural members, special devices and other general welding. • Directs the work of one other Gas Welder or Fitter 1/C or lower grade directly assisting him; may also direct others performing such duties as equipment operation, digging and directing traffic. • Performs any of the duties of a Gas Fitter 1/C. • Performs other related or less skilled work as directed. Skills and Requirements • Must have completed training for Gas Fitter 1/C, as described in Memorandum of Agreement governing Gas Department Training and Job Progression. • Must have had prior welding experience through special training or previous job experience, and must pass a welder qualification test Qualified Welder must pass a requalifying test at least once each three • years. If he fails this test, he will be trained for up to one month on low pressure work and then retested. Failure of three tests within a four-year period will reduce Welder to Gas Fitter 1/C. • Must have completed high school or obtained a High School Equivalency Diploma recognized by New York State. • Should have thorough knowledge of Company's gas practices and standards. • Must be familiar with Company's Safety Rules, approved methods of resuscitation and able to render practical First Aid. • Must be able to qualify for operator's licenses as required by law.
