Welder / Fitter

Description: We are currently seeking 1st and 2nd shift Welder / Fitter for plate and structural fabrication work. • Basic knowledge of fitting plate, structural material and pipe utilizing shop drawings, specifications and travelers • Use torches to cut/cope beams, cut/bevel plates and heat straighten parts • Knowledge of fitting and welding various materials; carbon steel, stainless steel, inconel and aluminum • Welding processes may include; Flux-cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Metal-cored Arc Welding (MCAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) and Submerged Arc Weld (SAW) • Perform welding in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions • Produce consistent welds in accordance with shop drawings and customer specifications • Follow welding procedure specifications (WPS) to set up welding machines and check weld sizes with company-issued weld gages • Run overhead cranes and forklifts when necessary to move parts throughout the shop About Us Custom Engineering is a heavy fabrication, welding, and machine shop conveniently located less than a mile off the Bayfront Parkway on McClelland Ave. Our ability to complete complex jobs both long-run and short-run, top-of-the-line machinery, and outstanding quality allow us to serve many industries including oil & gas, construction, mining, transportation, power generation, and entertainment. Pipe Welder 1st Class

About the Role: As a Pipe Welder, you will play a crucial role in the shipbuilding & repair industry by ensuring the integrity and quality of welded pipe systems. You will work alongside a Pipe Fitter to weld pipe joints and make repairs on steel pipe of varying sizes and follow a variety of welding procedures. You will be responsible for interpreting blueprints and technical drawings to execute precise welding tasks that meet industry standards. This position requires a strong commitment to safety protocols and quality assurance, as your work directly impacts the performance of the final product. Ultimately, your skills will help maintain the high standards of craftsmanship that our company is known for, ensuring customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Minimum Qualifications: • High school diploma or equivalent. • Pass a 6G E6010 open root and E7018 fill and cap test on 2" and 6" sch 40 pipe. • At least 1-2 years of experience in shipyard work or industrial work. • At least 1-2 years of experience as a pipe welder. • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints. • Ability to read and understand piping drawings and schematics. • Strong understanding of safety protocols and practices in welding. • Ability to follow directions, work with others, and work in less-then-ideal conditions (cold, heights, small spaces.) Preferred Qualifications: • Additional certifications in specialized welding techniques. • Experience with automated welding equipment. • Knowledge of different types of metals and their welding properties. • Familiarity with industry regulations and standards. • Familiarity with the use of hand tools (wrenches, impact guns, drills. grinders, etc.) • Welding Experience (SMAW, FCAW) Responsibilities: • Perform high-quality welding on various types of pipes using techniques such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding. • Interpret and analyze blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to determine welding requirements. • Conduct inspections of welded joints to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. • Maintain welding equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working condition and properly calibrated. • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to complete projects on time and within budget. Skills: The required skills for this position include advanced welding techniques, which you will apply daily to ensure the structural integrity of pipe systems. Your ability to read and interpret blueprints will be essential in executing precise welds that meet specifications. Attention to detail is crucial, as you will conduct inspections to verify the quality of your work and ensure compliance with safety standards. Additionally, your problem-solving skills will be utilized when troubleshooting equipment issues or addressing challenges that arise during the welding process.
