CNC Operator - Level 1 & 2

Winsert is seeking qualified candidates for CNC Operators in South Bend, Indiana! This vacancy will be located at a production machine shop that utilizes CNC equipment to support close tolerance and complex components. CNC equipment consists of horizontal milling, 5th axis milling, mill/turn and lathe styles ranging in capabilities. Pay: $17 - $27 per hour depending on experience ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: • Operate CNC machine controls and change tool settings to keep product dimensions within specified tolerances. • Stock and disposition product in multiple machining equipment, as required. • Replace, position, & secure cutting tooling in tool holders on CNC machines, using hand tools. • Inspect product to verify conformance within required specifications, using a variety of measurement and inspection equipment. • Perform limited total productive maintenance at the specified intervals. • Perform limited data collection requirements, such as SPC or daily production information. • CNC Operator 2 must be proficient in operating one or more of the following additional areas: 4-axis, 5-axis, turning, mill-turn & Swiss work centers. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Exercise good time management, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. • Demonstrate a professional demeanor. • Ability to use basic hand tools. • Basic mechanical aptitude. • Ability to read and understand blueprints. • Understanding of basic mathematics. • Ability to use computer skills for ERP reporting and data entry. • Consistency and personal accountability are important attributes for this position. • Must be able to resolve problems on a daily basis, handle multi-tasking and make effective decisions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: • Vision must be correctable to allow reading/viewing of documents and computer screen. • Hearing must be correctable to allow understanding of instructions and communication with others. • Mobility and coordination must allow for required tasks to be performed. • Requires prolonged sitting, standing, bending, stooping and stretching. • Requires the ability to lift fifty pounds. • Requires good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity and a normal range of hearing and vision (with or without correction). EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • High School Diploma or equivalent. • Competent in both English and Metric measurement scales. • Skill, ability, and work experience in machining is preferred. Job Summary: Operates conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts. Responsible for maintaining high productivity rate and meeting quality requirements. Essential Functions: Operate assigned machinery to fabricate parts to the required specifications by: • Follow proper machine procedures and instructions. • Ensuring proper tooling is used for machine. • Creating and sizing jaws on the machine. • Changing chucking devices when necessary. • Recognizing insert and tool geometry. • Making offset adjustments for size. • Troubleshoot issues at the machine and make necessary adjustments. Ensures all parts are to the required specifications by: • Maintaining and continuously improving the quality of parts produced. • Reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. • Verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications. • Complying with all work instructions. • Following and maintaining ISO, AS, and Schafer procedures. • Completing Schafer’s quality certification requirements for assigned area Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by: • Conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures. • Starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. • Conferring with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems. Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by: • Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines. • Operator multiple machines. • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining. • Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools. • Reducing downtime of machines setups. • Getting computer setup ready by preparing tooling, fixtures, steel, gages, etc. for jobs located in Kanban locations at assigned machines. • Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by: • Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution. • Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures. • Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed. • Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements. • Resolving problems. • Performing other job-related duties as required. • Helping evaluate job applicant’s knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring. • Passing along vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts. • Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines. • Assisting and/or training in other areas as needed.
