CNC Machinist

Job description: Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and CNC machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts by performing the following duties. Essential Duties: Studies blueprints, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Selects program if available or programs functions to create a part per blueprint by selecting fields to enter part and tool set-ups considering tools needed, tolerances, material type, quantity and resources available. Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining. Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. Runs trial to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed data control. Runs machining center, including but not limited to, prepping parts, loading parts, starting and observing machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machining controls, and unloading parts. Grinds, files and sands machined parts. Cleans machined parts. Performs first-piece and in-process inspection by checking dimensions of part per blueprint using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and tape measure. Inspects parts according to C=0 chart. Completes inspection form. Performs routine preventative maintenance and general repairs on machines as required. Completes maintenance log. Sets up and operates manual machining equipment as assigned Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), one to two years related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and ability to read and interpret blueprint and to read basic measuring tools are required. Previous CNC programming and set up experience preferred. Strong mechanical aptitude. Position Snapshot A Machinist is commonly expected to know and must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. To be successful in this role you will: ​​​​​ • Read and comprehend single components on blueprints, installation and arrangement drawings • Operate a lathe and mill in order to fabricate metal parts or fixtures for machine modifications • Operate vertical and horizontal band saws • Work under close tolerances (+/- .001) and use measuring equipment (micrometer, calipers, depth gauges, etc.) to confirm conformity • Have basic troubleshooting skills (hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical) and mechanical repair abilities • Be able to measure and create a drawing for parts that are made in the machine shop • Be able to work safely by following all guidelines, rules, and safe operating procedures Requirements and Education: • Broad Technical training (high school plus 1 to 2 years of apprenticeship/applied trades training). Training requires a basic knowledge in the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of precision measuring instruments. • Associate’s degree in Machine Tool Technology is preferred. • Minimum of three years’ work-related experience is required • An equivalent combination of education and work-related experience may be acceptable. CNC Operator

Key Responsibilities: • Performing turning, drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, facing, and similar machining operations on CNC controlled machines to produce a variety of parts composed of materials such as: steel, brass, bronze, aluminum, stainless steel, etc. • Assisting with changings of feeders, pads, guide bushing to accommodate the various sizes of stock. • Downloading programs to the machines. Sequence of operations, cams and tooling are generally prescribed. • Mounting and clamping tools in the machine. • Positioning cams in the machine and adjust for proper timing of operations. • Adapting standard cams and tools to special and short run jobs. • Following instructions on the cover sheet as to tool grinding requirements and turret location. • Detecting faulty operation or defective material and reporting these and/or any unusual conditions to foreman. • Inspecting the parts at frequent intervals to assure that the print specifications are being maintained. • Replacing or sharpening worn out tools, as necessary. • Removing chips from the machine and dispose in proper location. Maintain the machines as required by cleaning, oiling and greasing, etc. • Performing all duties in compliance with all safety and health regulations. • Keeping the work area clean, orderly, and safe. Qualifications: • Technical diploma and/or one to two years related experience or equivalent with CNC machinery. • Minimum of 1 year experience working at a CNC operator.
