Essential Job Functions (listing most important first) • Performs work according to blueprints, lay-out drawings, wiring diagrams, or by oral instruction. • Installs conduit to walls or bulkheads with brackets and screws using hand tools. May tack weld brackets using welding equipment. May cut metal with cutting torch for the purpose of installing brackets or wiring. • Threads wires through conduit or hangers to terminals such as connection boxes, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and switch panels. • Strips insulation from wire ends and connects ends using screw-type connectors or solders ends to terminals using hand tools and soldering iron. • Connects power-supply circuits to radio, radar, sonar, fire control, mechanical power systems, and other electronic equipment. • Tests electrical characteristics such as voltage, resistance, and phase angle in circuits using voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase-rotation indicators. • May construct instrument panels using hand tools, rulers, and power tools. • Performs other incidental tasks such as transporting tools, materials, and supplies. May use overhead cranes. May also operate company vehicles. Essential Job Requirements Education and Vocation Must be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically. Vocational education; high school, commercial or shop training, or technical school. On-the-job training; serving as a trainee on the job under the instruction of a qualified worker. Must be able to pass company-specified written and oral exam to qualify as a potential hire. Physical Requirements Repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, and speaking. The U.S. Dept. of Labor classifies this job as medium work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work. Working Conditions Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. May be required to work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. Work is performed in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to electrical and mechanical hazards, ultraviolet light, vibration, and noise. May be required to work off of scaffolding and ladders, working at height and over water. May work alone and in confined spaces. May be subject to very dramatic temperature changes such as when entering or exiting a tank. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hardhats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are all to be worn accordingly.
