Examination Date Week of November 17, 2025 Civil Service Board Office 371 West Second Street, Lower Level Dayton, Ohio 45402 *Certified candidates will be sent an email containing specific exam details at a later date. Responsibilities This position involves skilled carpentry work at the journey-level, including both general and bench carpentry with the use of power woodworking machinery. The carpenter constructs, alters, and maintains buildings and fixtures, builds and repairs furniture, installs tile and drywall, and occasionally performs minor masonry, roofing, and glass work. Assignments come from supervisors via sketches, blueprints, or instructions, and the work is reviewed for quality and adherence to standards. The role may include supervising helpers, estimating materials and time, maintaining tools, and keeping records. It requires strong knowledge of carpentry methods, tools, and safety practices, as well as the ability to read plans, follow instructions, inspect materials, and guide other workers. Minimum Qualifications Education High School Diploma or G.E.D. Experience Must have 6 months of experience at the journey worker level. To reach the journey worker level, must have completed a a 4-year apprenticeship, have 8000 hours of carpentry work experience or been employed for 4 years as a Building Trades Worker for theCity of Dayton. Applications must specifically address each of the minimum qualifications, directly showing how each is met. License Requirements Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment. General Requirements Must be able to perform duties requiring physical strength including considerableuse of both arms, hands, feet, legs, and ability to climb, lift, balance, walk and stoop while handling materials. Ability to lift, maneuver and carry materials weighing 25 pounds regularly and in excess of 100 pounds periodically. Capable of climbing ladders and working from heights. Ability to read, write and understand blueprints. Citizenship Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States at time of application. Promotional Qualifications Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 119 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.
