Carpenter

Provide quality carpentry skills and craftsmanship on building construction jobs from foundation to rooftop. Performs work from minor repairs to design and remodeling, including providing cost estimates and managing a wide range of building projects Duties and Responsibilities: (*Indicates non-essential function) • Applies design and finish carpentry skills to many projects that may include installation of cabinetry and laminated countertops, shelving, baseboards, cabinets, laminating doors, paneling, etc. This involves selecting materials, providing estimates, purchasing materials after approval, assembly and applying any finish. • Completes rough carpentry projects such as building dumpster enclosures, installing shingles, framing walls, installing drywall, building floors, tile repair, etc. in accordance with local building codes. • Acts as liaison with vendors on remodels and new construction, inspecting vendor quality and assessing performance. • Installs ceiling systems of all types, including textured plaster ceilings, drywall, acoustical drop ceilings, moldings, and plaster ceilings. • Installs all types of windows, both as new construction or replacements. Performs glass repair, cutting and sizing. Builds indoor/outdoor stationary windows. Installs trim, casing, sills, stools and jams. • Completes requisitions and tracks/expedites supplies as needed. Performs various types of basic labor on all college projects as well as room setups and moving offices. • Assists with animal/pest control and operates forklift, snow removal equipment and tractor with bucket. • Attends weekly and monthly meetings. Collaborates with other trades in the design of projects. • Maintains clean and safe worksite both in the shop and at the job site. Ensures that all tools and work vehicles are operated properly and are safely maintained. • Applies basic electrical knowledge to assist electricians as needed, changing outlets, ballast, etc. • May assume responsibility for, or assist with, hardware orders and installation (including locks) in campus buildings, including organizing, cataloging, rekeying and maintaining lock integrity throughout campus. • May assume responsibility for the installation, operation and maintenance of all electronic security (code entry) systems. • May coordinate with Conference Services regarding setups for high school commencements, meeting with school representatives to ensure that their needs are met. • May complete masonry projects, including repairing or pouring pads, sidewalks and vertical structures and laying or repairing block walls and other structures. • May create and edit a visual record of major projects utilizing multimedia technology. • May supervise student workers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • High School Diploma plus technical certification and at least two years of related experience in the skilled trades, or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Strong experience in building trades, including rough and finish carpentry. Experience with electrical or masonry work desirable. • Basic knowledge of electricity, plumbing, architectural hardware, plastic laminate work and drywall finishing. • Willingness to perform all types of basic repairs and projects, including snow removal and room setups, as a member of the maintenance team. • Ability to lift over 65 pounds and to climb and work on roofs and to crouch and crawl in enclosed spaces. • Ability to work safely and productively as a member of the maintenance staff.

Job responsibilities and duties to include • Able to identify and complete work in a timely fashion. • Safely operate all tools, including, but not limited to, joiners, shapers, band saws, skill saws, routers, planers, table saws, nail guns, and drills. • Build walls, partitions, stairs, ramps, landings and decks, cabinets, shelves, etc. • Layout, cut, drill, miter, sand and otherwise prepare materials, and to use said materials in the fabrication of various end products, including, but not limited to, lumber, plywood, particle board, plastics, and glass. • Install, apply, maintain, or repair shock-absorbing, light reflective, sound-deadening, and decorative coverings to ceilings, walls, and floors. • Hang and trim windows, doors, cabinets. • Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials. • Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue. • Erects framework for structures and lays subflooring. • Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work. • Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware. • Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete. • Maintains a clean work area free of hazards. • Report problem areas and safety hazards. • Performs other related jobs and duties as assigned.
