The Mig Welder is responsible for setting up fixtures for production to produce high-quality products in a safe and efficient manner. The Mig Welder will: 1) Obtain job assignments and specific instructions from the supervisor. 2) Set up welding fixtures to produce consistent quality products in a safe and efficient manner. 3) Place parts to be welded around fixtures to promote efficiency. 4) Verify that all required parts gathered up match the prints or part number to be welded. 5) A 1st quality inspection must be performed and recorded for each job, even if only the job number changes. Newer Welders are required to have their first piece set-ups verified by either Quality or their supervisor. 6) On long production runs, do quality checks at the start of the shift and before scheduled break. 7) Place welding screens around the area to protect other workers/people in the area. 8) Visually inspect each part of defects, fill any pin holes, and remove excessive splatter or welding wire pieces. 9) Tag completed parts with all information available including: Order Number, Part Number, Color, Quantity on lift, initials, and shift. Verify that the count is the same as what is on the tag. 10) Place or stack the finished lift in a safe and orderly manner. 11) Fully fill out production reports. Note: Mig Welders MUST have steel-toed shoes AND a welding helmet. All other safety equipment will be provided. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following): • Lay out, position, align and fit components together using applicable machines, tools, and equipment. • Bolt, clamp, and tack weld parts to secure them in position for final welding. • Set up welding equipment. • Perform SMAW, FCAW, MCAW arc welding and oxyacetylene cutting on ferrous and nonferrous metals in accordance with established methods and procedures. • Maintain production documentation for each procedure. • Follow all applicable safety and sanitation procedures. • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including the safe operation of equipment and help to maintain a safe, clean work environment. • Participates in toolbox meetings. • Adheres to and promotes compliance with all company PPE requirements. • All other duties as assigned. COMPETENCIES (required skills and abilities): • Working knowledge of how to use hand tools and setup and operate applicable shop machines correctly. • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, able to take/read measurements to plan layout and apply to job. • Able to determine the appropriate welding equipment or method to use based on construction requirements. • Layout components for fitting/welding according to job specifications (cut material with saw, hand grinder and torches to match measurements). • Operate angle grinder to prepare parts to be welded. • Align job components using tape measure. • Must be able to weld in the 1G (flat welding) and 1F position. • Must be able to read and interpret welding symbols. • Must be trained to safely operate an overhead crane and operating a crane experience. • Prefer candidate to have 2 years of welding experience or completion of 1 year of a registered Apprenticeship Program. • Proficient in a variety of welding processes i.e., SMAW, GMAW, FCAW. • Experienced in using electrical or manual tools (saws, square, grindes, etc.). • Must use provided PPE (face-shield, gloves, etc.) to perform job in accordance with safety standards. • Professional Certification is an asset (AWS welding certified). • High school diploma or equivalent. • Must be at least 18 years of age. • Must be able to work in a group/team environment as well as independently. • Must be willing to work overtime and weekends when required.
