Position Summary We are seeking a Welder A to join our team. In this role, you will utilize safe practices, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and procedural requirements while interpreting weld procedure specifications and engineered drawings. Your primary focus will be to tack and weld structural components such as beams, columns, joists, frames, stairs, and railings. Key Responsibilities • Safety & Compliance: Identify, prevent, and correct potential safety hazards in accordance with Southwest Steel policies and procedures. Always maintain a clean and safe work area. • Material Preparation: Identify and prepare materials for welding based on SWS Quality Management System (QMS) specifications and engineered drawings. Utilize appropriate tools and measuring devices for accuracy. • Welding Operations: Perform welding on components and assemblies using GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW* processes, following Southwest Steel weld procedure specifications. • Cutting & Shaping: Use equipment such as chop saws, band saws, and oxy/fuel torches to cut workpieces. Heat, form, and dress metal parts using hand tools, torches, or arc welding equipment. • Quality Assurance: Achieve a pass rate of 98% or higher for all CJP (Complete Joint Penetration) and PJP (Partial Joint Penetration) weldments. • Material Handling: Move and position structural components using chain rigging, overhead cranes, jib cranes, and other material handling equipment. • Inspection & Alignment: Inspect equipment and structural components to ensure alignment with Southwest Steel processes and procedures. Qualifications Required: • Certification: Ability to pass 3G FCAW, 2G FCAW, and 2F D1.3 GMAW weld tests. (*4G D1.1 FCAW; 3F D1.6 FCAW; 4F D1.6 FCAW; 3G D1.6 GTAW; 2F GTAW). • Expertise: In-depth knowledge of oxy/fuel operations, welding processes, shop machinery, and repair procedures for welding discontinuities. • Welding Skills and Quality Control: Ability to identify weld discontinuities and apply basic repair procedures to ensure high-quality welds. Intermediate-level knowledge of welding techniques to meet industry standards and project specifications. • Technical Skills: Proficient in interpreting blueprints, tolerance for gaps, holes, distortion control, camber, sweep, connections, splices, and cord length. Ability to identify weld discontinuities and in-depth knowledge of repair processes. In-depth knowledge of weld procedure specifications and weld symbols. • Equipment Operation: In-depth knowledge and ability to safely operate overhead cranes and jib cranes. • Tooling: Possess all necessary tools to effectively perform welding and fabrication tasks. • Work Ethic: Ability to multi-task, demonstrate punctuality, and maintain a strong work ethic in a team environment. Preferred: • Certification: Ability to pass 4G D1.1 FCAW; 3F D1.6 FCAW; 4F D1.6 FCAW; 3G D1.6 GTAW; 2F GTAW weld tests preferred and will be required for further advancement within this job classification.
