Summary Job Description Reporting to the Assistant Supervisor of Building Repairs, the Mason and Plasterer is responsible for varied types of general masonry and plastering work involved in the construction, repair, and maintenance of cement, gypsum, block, stone, plaster, and brick structures. Principal Duties And Responsibilities • Inspects walls, ceilings, and other plaster work, interior and exterior brickwork, stonework, tile floors, drains, and other types of masonry and plastering work; ascertains the nature of needed repairs and does whatever repair work is necessary. • Constructs utility manholes; builds forms and pours concrete floors, sidewalks, steps and foundations; performs other types of masonry and plastering work; constructs block, stone and brick walls, chimneys, columns, and partitions by establishing the grade, setting the lines, constructing the forms, mixing the cement or mortar, pouring the footings or foundation, and laying the block, stone and/or brick; finishes walks, floors and other surfaces. • Prepares walls and ceilings by applying the wood, wire or compositions lath; determines the proper mix for each coat; sets the screeds; applies the scratch and/or brown and/or finish or white coat; erects drywall and tapes, spackles and finishes; prepares bases; mixes concrete; patches plaster and stucco walls. • Makes emergency masonry and plastering repairs. • Uses trowels, jointers, edgers, chisels, levels, plumb bobs, vibrators, concrete mixers, and other special tools: mixes cement mortar, lime cement mortar, and lime mortar; slakes lime and tempers mortar. • Requisitions, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials and supplies. • Works from plans, specifications and sketches. • Keeps simple records of materials used, work done and time spent. • Performs routine preventive maintenance work. • Performs duties on all buildings on campus and all exterior features on campus. • Uses work orders and fills in all pertinent information. • Follows all safety procedures including wearing uniform and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE.) • Utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized management information systems used by the Physical Plant Department. • Ensures that all staff and customers are treated with respect and courtesy. • All customers to be greeted, questioned as to their needs, advised of any necessary information and thanked for their business in a pleasant manner. Qualifications REQUIRED: • Three (3) years of comprehensive experience in masonry and plastering work involving the construction, repair, and maintenance of cement, plaster, stone and brick structures. • A valid NJ driver’s license. • Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions and assignments. • Ability to inspect, repair, construct, and maintain cement, plaster, and brick structures and to use trowels, jointers, pressure sprayers, concrete mixers, and other special tools and equipment. • Ability to observe established safety requirements. Preferred • Knowledge of the problem involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing, and maintaining walls, ceilings, interior and exterior brickwork, tile floors, drains, utility manholes, cement and concrete floors, sidewalks, steps and foundations, sewage and water lines, forms, and other types of masonry and plastering work. • Ability to analyze problems involving masonry and plastering work, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods. • Ability to requisition, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials and supplies. • Ability to keep simple records of materials used, work completed and time spent. • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. • NOTE: This is a Civil Service position. As required by the State of New Jersey, in order to be certified to the position and attain permanent status in title, candidates are subject to an examination process and successful completion of a 4-Month Working Test Period. This position is designated as essential. The designation of essential requires employees at these 24/7 facilities to be present due to inclement weather situations.
