Dry Stone Mason-Trail & Restoration Technician

About the position The Dry Stone Mason-Trail & Restoration Technician at The Natural Garden Inc. is responsible for creating and restoring natural landscapes using dry stone masonry techniques. This role involves working with native plants and stonework to enhance ecological landscapes while ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and safety on job sites. The ideal candidate will have a passion for dry stonework and a commitment to the company's mission of promoting biodiversity and natural beauty in the Shenandoah Valley. Responsibilities • Piece, cut, and set stones and boulders according to construction plans and specifications to create stone patios, walks, steps, walls, and boulder outcroppings. , • Follow up grade repair and fine grading. , • Assist conservation landscaping team with hand grading, hardscape work, planting, trail work, and maintenance. , • Assist habitat restoration team with invasive exotic plant treatment and clearing, planting, and management. , • Safely operate chainsaws, brush cutters, string trimmers, and similar equipment. , • Actively develop understanding of native plant communities through on-the-job learning and other professional development opportunities. Requirements • Experience with dry stone masonry, installing dry set stone patio, walk, and step projects and dry-stone walling projects. , • Willing to learn and move to an advanced level at dry setting stone patios, walks, steps, and dry stacking stone walls. , • Ability to assess the quality of stonework and materials. , • Ability to safely operate tools, machines, and other equipment. , • Positive and supportive attitude in the work environment. , • Able to communicate with a wide range of individuals (less experienced teammates, customers, other contractors, etc.). , • Able to move heavy stone by hand as needed, perform hand excavation and operate heavy machinery to excavate, load/unload, and place stone. , • Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in a wide range of weather. , • Able to lift and carry at least 40 lbs. and be able to perform a variety of physical duties for 8+ hours daily with frequent bending, lifting and carrying. , • Adequate knowledge of mathematics to perform job duties. , • Able to visualize and implement work according to company aesthetic standards. Nice-to-haves • Experience operating mini-excavators and skid loaders. , • Experience driving manual transmission trucks. , • Experience with the native plants of the Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmont of Virginia or the Mid-Atlantic Region. , • Experience pulling loaded trailers (two to seven tons). , • Education background including an associate or bachelor's degree in natural resources, environmental science, ecology, wildlife conservation, conservation management, native plant botany/studies is preferred, but related training and program certificates will certainly be considered. , • Herbicide-Pesticide Applicators license or Commercial License. Construction Laborer - Hardscape Construction

Construction Laborer – Hardscape Construction Southern Playground has an immediate need for an experienced Construction Laborer. The ideal candidate will have experience with hardscape construction (working with materials & structures used to create outdoor spaces), including carpentry, irrigation installation, water & sewer pipe installation, concrete forming & finishing, paver installation, and general labor skills. What We Do: We design and construct unique public outdoor spaces, including playground and aquatic environments for children and families. These spaces typically include water fountains, interactive water features, outdoor shelters, decorative concrete, paver patios/walkways, and public parking spaces. The Details: • Location: Harrisonburg, Virginia (on-site/outdoors) • Duration: 6+ month project • Schedule: Typical work week is Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm (schedule/hours, and days of week may slightly vary depending on project deadlines, weather conditions, etc.) Job Duties & Necessary Skills: • You will help establish grades, perform layout, glue PVC water lines, backfill and tamp excavations, install perimeter forms, install concrete rebar reinforcement, place and finish concrete. • The project includes water fountains, aquatic play areas, colored concrete, and synthetic turf. You will succeed if you have experience and knowledge of the layout and construction of pools, fountains, retaining walls, sitting walls, patios, walkways, steps, and/or pillars. • Most projects include excavation. Your skill set should include the following: demolition, drainage resolution, cut/fill, compaction, roadway installation, foundation preparation and backfill, grading and re-grading, new lawn installation and repair, seeding and straw, hydro-seeding, sod, playground areas, septic install, shed pad install, site preparation, trench and backfill. • You will be responsible for the daily upkeep of the job site, company equipment, vehicles, and tools. • Each crew member must wear appropriate personal protective equipment and require his fellow crew members to do the same. • No matter what specific task you are completing, you can expect to get dirty doing it. • The job requires heavy lifting and working outdoors in all kinds of weather. • We are required to work in rainy and/or wet conditions, which means some Saturdays or longer hours may be needed to stay on schedule. • A valid driver's license is required; CDL license is a plus. • Bi-lingual Spanish and English is a plus.
