The Automation Controls Engineer will assist in the design, implementation, and support of continuous improvements of high-capacity processes to produce multiple device platforms within QuidelOrtho. The role will help lead the implementation, validation, and operation for new and existing automated production lines. This includes interfacing with suppliers’ technical teams and outside contractors to oversee project design and work implementation. The Automation Controls Engineer will be a critical role among the site engineering team and will provide ongoing support to manufacturing: improving process performance, mitigation of equipment downtime, and continuous improvement. Responsibilities include troubleshooting automated equipment, programming for new and renovated automation, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions, exploring and implementing new manufacturing capabilities, maximizing process and equipment availability/performance/quality (OEE), determining design and performance parameters, developing feasibility studies, creating cost and capital budgets, executing project timelines, leading control system commissioning, participating in product design for manufacturability, collaborating with R&D on process and equipment specifications, working with equipment suppliers to design and qualify manufacturing equipment, generating validation protocols (IQ, OQ, PQ), developing training protocols and conducting training, and performing duties in compliance with quality, regulatory, and business policies. The role requires a B.S. in EE, ME, or related field, minimum 3 years experience in programming/commissioning automation process equipment, excellent problem-solving skills, knowledge of machine vision systems and automation platforms, understanding of electro/mechanical equipment and system integration, proficiency in PLC ladder logic, organizational skills, knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Project, proactive approach, budgeting and project planning knowledge, and experience with technical experiments and validation protocols in medical device manufacturing. Preferred qualifications include 5+ years in FDA high-volume medical device manufacturing, Allen-Bradley PLC knowledge, and experience with AutoCAD, Lab View, and statistical analysis software.
