The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking to fill two (2) vacancies for Engineering Support Associates to become part of a team, performing multi-skilled engineering support work for the Water/Sewer/Streets Bureau. The work includes entry to advanced level technical engineering support of Arlington County's Water, Sewer, Storm Sewer and Street infrastructure. Responsibilities Specific duties include: • Coordinating requests for Miss Utility related to daily work schedules; • Using Asset Management System (Cartegraph) to manage requests/tasks for Trades Manager/Leaders; • Reviewing and responding to citizen complaints using Q-Alert or equivalent systems; • Conducting preliminary investigations to determine information such as ownership, location of utilities, easements, and using Microsoft Office functions to enter specific documentation and follow-up details and/or reports; • Providing support for emergency operations such as snow removal; • Overseeing and coordinating processes for Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) compliance; • Assisting in the research of Storm and Sanitary Sewer Easement; • Monitoring the quality of Contractor's work to ensure compliance with federal/state/county regulations and specifications for small projects; and • Providing customer service by researching and resolving citizen issues, working with technical staff and contractors, business owners and property owners during investigations to understand, address, and follow-up on concerns. Qualifications Minimum: High school diploma/GED, plus some experience in a public works environment (or directly related field) which includes one or more of the following areas: • Engineering Support; • Construction management; • Trades work in a Water/Sewer/Streets, Utility, or similar environment; • Customer service in a trades, utility, or related environment; and/or • Automated records management. Substitution: Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field may substitute for experience. Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B, and/or experience in one or more of the following: • Working with relational database facilities maintenance programs; • Working with an automated work order/asset management system (i.e. Cartegraph); • Reading engineering plans, schematics, maps, and drawings showing streets and/or sewer systems; • Using Microsoft Office Suite functions such as Word, Access and/or Excel; and/or • Working with citizens to resolve public works issues. Special Requirements • Work is performed both outdoors in all types of weather conditions and within an office environment. The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt, and may include extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to heavy objects and equipment. • Applicants must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid Driver License. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record. • An offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable pre-hire background check conducted by the Sheriff's Department on all final candidates. It may include successful checks of the following: criminal record, credit history and DOT physical. Additional Information Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 6:30a.m. - 3:00p.m. Employee must be available for call back in emergency situations, particularly during snow removal season. Employee may be required to work alternate work shift(s) which may include extended shift(s), hours outside of normal schedule, and include evening and/or weekends (typically only during snow season). This position is part of the Engineering Support Associate Multi-Grade (I, II and III) pay band which includes entry, journey and senior level work. The pay range listed above encompasses entry through senior level. Most new hires begin at entry level; however, applicants with previous experience may be considered eligible to be hired at a higher level. The supervisor will discuss with employees how the competencies can be achieved, both through training and experience on the job. The Following Salary Ranges Are Effective July 1, 2025 Engineering Support Associate I (Entry): $54,558.40 - $84,572.80. Engineering Support Associate II (Journey): $60,174.40 - $93,288.00.
