Job Description: Job Title: HVAC Mechanic Revised: June 2025 Status: Non-Exempt Full-time 12 month position Wage: 740 Reports To: Manager of Facilities Services Overview: Under direct supervision provide repairs and routine maintenance to heating and air conditioning systems in a wide variety of campus settings. Works with the facilities department and maintenance team in whatever capacity necessary to accomplish college-wide goals. Essential Duties: Install, maintain and repair heating, ventilation and cooling units for both commercial and residential customers. Diagnose and repair of electronic, mechanical and electrical components of these systems. Provide routine maintenance to heating and air conditioning systems across campus including units utilizing forced air, hot water, and steam. Schedule and prioritize daily tasks by utilizing work order system. Maintain good working order of company vehicle including refueling as necessary and reporting any mechanical issues. Stock necessary parts, tools and safety equipment in company vehicle. Diagnose and repair diverse services issues including pneumatic and electrical controls, calibrating thermostats and monitoring programming with outside vendors as appropriate. Accomplish all duties in accordance with established safety principles and guidelines. Additional Duties: Repair leaking faucets, valves, and pipes and clear clogs in drains, toilets, drinking fountains and hot water heaters. Available to work nights and weekends as needed. Available to be placed on a rotating on-call list, for campus emergency needs. The on-call time frame is one week per rotation. Participate in College provided training opportunities. Other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibility: This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. Requirements: Education: High School Diploma or GED required, HVAC certification preferred. Skills & Experience: 3-5 years of experience in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and correcting diverse HVAC service issues. Good analytical skills and attention to detail with the ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and manuals. Excellent customer service and ability to relate to a diverse campus population including co-workers, faculty members, students, and visitors. Ability to work independently in a timely manner, making sure job is done correctly the first time. Ability to utilize a radio for frequent communication including the ability to hear and speak clearly. Basic command of computer skills including email to complete work tasks. Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass an MVR check. Work Environment: Exposed to hazardous equipment, such as power tools, on a daily basis. Subjected to extremely bright or dim lighting conditions. May requires working in awkward positions. Routinely required wearing protective gear, such as goggles and masks. Occasionally exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Machinery can be quite loud. Must be able to work outdoors in the winter months and may experience extreme temperatures in non-air conditioned environments in the summer months. Must be able to work in confined space environments. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to listen, hear, speak, read, write, bend, stoop, and stand for long periods of time. Must possess finger and hand dexterity for using small tools and equipment. Must be able to lift 50 pounds; be able to pounds, pull, carry or maneuver heavier items (with additional manpower or appropriate devices); carry ladders; work from heights, and in small crawl spaces. Expected hours of work: This is a Full-time first shift position with a 40 hour work week. Hours may vary during break periods such as Summer Break and Spring Break. On occasion employees are expected to report for emergency response situations and subject to supervisor approval, overtime may be required.
