Maintenance Carpenter

About the position The Maintenance Carpenter position at Carleton College involves performing a wide range of carpentry functions, including framing, finish work, structural repairs, and installation of various fixtures. This role is essential for maintaining the college's facilities, ensuring that both commercial and residential construction standards are met. The position requires a skilled carpenter who can work independently and assist in coordinating with other trades and contractors. Responsibilities • Perform all types of carpentry-related building repairs and fabricate components as necessary. , • Assist Locksmith as needed with installation, repair, and maintenance of locksets and security hardware. , • Install, repair, and maintain door closing devices and key cylinders, including cutting keys. , • Provide back-up coverage to the storeroom and assist in furniture assembly and repairs. , • Construct, assemble, and install cabinetry and counter/table tops. , • Install and repair acoustic ceiling systems and hang various boards and pictures. , • Construct walls, hang and prep doors, and perform other finish carpentry tasks. , • Perform emergency roof and roofing repairs and assist in coordinating outside contractors. , • Install, repair, manufacture, and restore all types of glazing and perform glass cutting and polishing processes. , • Install and maintain window shades, blinds, and drapery systems. , • Maintain fire extinguisher inventory and install/replaces extinguishers as needed. , • Schedule maintenance and repair work to minimize disruptions to normal routines. , • Assist in evaluating building materials and estimating labor and supply costs for projects. , • Coordinate work between other departments and conduct inventory audits of supplies and tools. , • Maintain carpentry equipment and assist other Facilities operations as needed. , • Direct activities of student workers and temporary employees. Requirements • Two year certificate/diploma from an accredited vocational program in a carpentry related field. , • Journeyman carpenter with extensive experience in residential institutional construction, cabinetry, and millwork (5 years experience preferred). , • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in wood frame, steel stud, and concrete/masonry construction and repair. , • Skill with hand and power tools used in carpentry. , • Knowledge of commercial and residential construction methods and materials. , • Experience working with keying systems and door hardware. , • A valid, unrestricted Minnesota driver's license. , • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Nice-to-haves • Experience with emergency repairs and maintenance coordination. , • Familiarity with safety procedures and hazardous materials handling.
