See More Details >>Poition: Carpenter Description The Carpenter works as a member of the Maintenance Team to ensure that all carpentry and carpentry related work orders and special projects are completed in a timely manner. In addition the employee is responsible for responding to out calls when having to respond to special needs and requests in after hour situations. The Carpenter is assigned to primarily work at a limited number of schools. Although he / she will primarily work to maintain these facilities, each Carpenter will be called upon to work to assist other Carpenters at any other school on any given day. Job Summary: Responsible for designing, building, installing, and repairing structures, fixtures, furniture, and other items using different types of materials including wood and steel. • build counter tops, cabinets and other wooden structures in the maintenance shop then install in the appropriate school room • perform demolition of walls / rooms and frame up and build according to blue prints and schematic drawings. This will include floating sheet rick, installing trim, building handicapped facilities, building ramps, framing up and pouring of concrete for relatively small areas, etc. Generally construction is limited to relative simple or small projects such as moving / constructing walls and windows to create work space • repair / rehang doors, repair locks, frame up / install and seal windows • identify roof leaks and where possible, perform repairs • make rounds of the school, talk to the principal, teachers and custodians to identify repair needs, ensure a work order is submitted and approved then respond to resolve the issue. This can involve painting, relocating office furniture / classroom desks, etc • respond to out work orders when assistance is needed by other members of the Maintenance Team. • This can involve special projects involved with Plumbing, Mechanical, Structural (welding), Electrical, HVAC, and Painting • respond to request to prepare facilities for and respond to after effects of hurricanes. This will include: shoveling, filling, distributing, securing sand bags to the schools, doors, etc., removing trees and branches from school buildings, and perform work to stabilize leakage situations in the roof until outside contractors are able to respond. Qualifications: Licensed carpenter preferred but unlicensed journeyman carpenter may also apply. Experience and training will be taken into consideration. Working Conditions Weather and Temperature: The employee work in both a climate controlled and non climate controlled environment that may or may not be protected from the environmental elements with a roof and walls. As such, the employee will have to be able to work in an environment which is exposed to the weather one can reasonably expect in southeast Louisiana; that is, temperatures in the 80E's 90E's and occasionally 100E's during the summer months and cold temperatures generally no lower than 20E during the winter. High winds will substantially effect the chill factor. Noise The Carpenter is exposed to noises from the equipment of sufficient intensity and pitch to provide distraction in some persons. Fumes / Hazards / Electricity The employee may have occasion to be exposed to various fumes (diesel / gas / welding / cutting). Furthermore when working with the Electrician he / she can be exposed to live wires necessitating proper handling and safety precautions / equipment be used and followed. The employee may have occasion to work with / near asbestos. Physical Requirements Medium Heavy Note: Although this job is considered a medium heavy work level job, there are occasions where the employee will repetitively have to handle 50 lbs sacks (hurricane preparation). Although this technically will elevate the physical demands to a heavy work level, in an attempt to avoid the erroneous thought that this individual would have to lift 100 lbs, the job is being called a medium heavy level job. However understand that repetitive lifting of 50 lbs is an essential job function for this position.
