Pipefitter

Pipefitter Basic Scope/Purpose Lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs, and maintains piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, and industrial processing systems. Essential Functions/Duties • Select type and size of pipe and related materials according to job plans and specifications. • Inspect work sites to determine presence of obstructions. • Plan sequence of installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers. • Cut pipe, using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine. • Thread pipe, using threading machine. • Bend pipe by hand or with pipe-bending machine. • Assemble and install variety of metal and non-metal pipe and pipe fittings, including those made of brass, copper, lead, glass, and plastic. • Join piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints. • Secure pipes to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers, using hand tools. • Test piping system for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks. • May weld hanging fixtures to structural steel members. • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria. • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. • Lift and carry objects of varying weights • Detect, recognize and respond to dangerous conditions or situations. • May be required to be licensed. Working Conditions/Physical Effort Conditions include working in office, shop, busy traffic areas, warehouses, and undeveloped properties, with frequent exposure to dirt, dust, grease, oil, vibrations, and adverse weather conditions. Must be able to safely access all areas of property, buildings, structures, wharves, rooftops and other elevated positions, as well as, confined spaces. Must be able to effectively use all required PPE equipment and lift up to fifty pounds. Strenuous physical demands are required to safely perform the essential functions associated with this position. Must be able to safely operate all involved equipment and tools. Must be capable of standing for long periods of time, bending consistently, working in confined spaces with limited access, on ladders, in personnel lifts, in workboats, and working in awkward body positions. Required Qualifications • Must have 4+ years working as an Industrial Pipe Fitter. • Must be able to read prints and illustrate thorough knowledge of industrial pipe fitting procedures and skills. • Must have good leadership and communication skills. • Must have experience on an industrial construction project. • Demonstrated industrial construction/maintenance history experience. • Good problem-solving abilities. • Good aptitude and manual dexterity. • Good reading comprehension. • Ability to work with others – team player. • Ability to work independently – minimal supervision. • Good communication skills with co-workers and supervisors. • Commitment to Zachry values and safety rules and regulations. Preferred Qualifications • Zachry ROF’ed employee. • Former Zachry Employee. • NCCER Certification as an Industrial Pipe Fitter • Formal/technical education Position Responsibilities • Read blueprints and specification to determine the scope of work: locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required. • Identify all tools required for tasks. • Identify safety risks and the precautions required to eliminate those risks. • Prepare, fabricate, install, and fit pipe to specifications. • Install valves, hangars, supports, flanges inside piping system according to plans and applicable specifications. • Perform test to ensure the quality of the pipe and the piping systems. • Hoist loads using slings, chains, shackles, hooks, cables, and other rigging equipment. Reports to Position • This position does not have any direct reports; however, the position will work closely with and oversee on occasion of helper and labor positions. The position will hold a positional and expertise authority of the helper and laborer positions. This tradesman does not function unsupervised in any situation. • Pipefitter II - This position is synonymous with an “Apprentice” position in the trades. This position has 3 or more years of experience, is considered to have in depth knowledge of pipefitting, but still requires some assistance. The Pipefitter II repairs and replaces piping systems, supports and equipment for commercial and industrial applications and is supervised by Pipefitter III or above. • Pipefitter III - This position is synonymous with a “Journeyman” position in the trades. This position has 5 or more years of experience and is considered to have mastery knowledge of commercial pipefitting. Ability to work independently in a timely manner.
