Construction Representative

Description: Shive-Hattery has an immediate opening for an experienced Construction Representative to join our Des Moines, IA office. As one of our construction representatives you will perform hands-on, real-world work on various civil, and building projects located throughout the area. You will conduct field inspections, interpret plans and specifications, and assist with construction testing. Project types will consist primarily of infrastructure related projects including roads, trails, pedestrian improvements, stormwater, and sanitary sewer projects. Other project types could include building projects assisting multi discipline teams with construction administration and field visits. Qualifications: • Associates Degree from Technical School in Construction Technology or 5+ years of construction experience in lieu of degree • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record • Ability to lift 25+ pounds • Strong communication and interpersonal skills • Ability to work independently and as part of a team • Contract administration and/or construction observation experience on Iowa DOT projects would be advantageous but not required. Requirements: • Attending pre-construction and project progress meetings where necessary • Evaluating plans and specifications for construction projects to ensure conformance with regulation • Conducting field inspections to document and measure daily quantities of installed materials • Issuing of violation notices and stop-work orders where structures and materials do not comply with regulations • Referring deviations and disagreements to engineers for clarification • Maintaining records of documentation and keep a detailed daily work log • Assisting engineers and contractors with inquiries • Preparing project specific reports, DOT forms, and/or daily observation reports • Communicating with project managers, clients, and contractors regarding project specifications and testing results • Attending close-out meetings of construction projects • Coordinating with testing technicians to ensure all required field tests are performed • Assisting testing team by conducting field and laboratory tests on materials to measure compliance with regulations A large portion of the day is spent on project sites. The physical demands include climbing ladders and construction jobsites. Applicant may encounter exposure to electrical equipment, cold, heat, heights, skin irritants, lung irritants, loud noises and difficult or unusual site surfaces. Construction Administrator

Description: Shive-Hattery is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Construction Administrator to join our team, in either our Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, or West Des Moines office location. As a Construction Administrator, you will serve as our design team’s on-site liaison during the construction phase of projects. This role ensures that construction activities align with the design intent, specifications, and quality standards. The Construction Administrator monitors progress, facilitates communication between stakeholders, and helps resolve field issues in real time. Experience and Qualifications: • Background in Architecture, Construction Management, Owner’s Construction Representation, Facilities Management, Construction Engineering, or related field. • 5+ years of experience in construction administration or site observation, preferably with an architectural firm. • Understanding of architectural drawings, specifications, and construction processes. • Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills. • Proficiency in construction management software (e.g., Newforma, Procore, Bluebeam, Submittal Exchange, Revit, AutoCAD). • Ability to travel to job sites and work in a field environment. • Other preferred Qualifications: Architectural licensure or working toward licensure, OSHA 10/30 construction certification, graduate of MBI training programs. Requirements: Site Observation & Reporting: • Conduct regular site visits to observe construction progress and verify compliance with architectural drawings and specifications. • Prepare detailed field reports, including photos and notes, documenting construction activities and any deviations. Coordination & Communication : • Act as the primary point of contact between the design team and the contractor during construction. • Attend and participate in construction meetings, including OAC (Owner-Architect-Contractor) meetings. • Communicate design clarifications and respond to RFIs (Requests for Information). • Have the ability to discern which decisions can be made on-site and which require input from the design team. • Represent the firm professionally in meetings with clients, contractors, and public meetings, clearly communicating technical information to both expert and non-expert. • Help enrich our relationships with construction managers and contractors. Resource for the Design Team Members: • Provide feedback to the design team on any issues with details or design elements as they arise. • Assist in the quality control process during the design phase, through periodic constructability or coordination reviews of the design documents • Responsible for educating staff on proper construction administration practices and procedures, and contributing to updates to company standards and specifications pertaining to the construction phase. • Knowledgeable and experienced in applying relevant provisions of Iowa Code and administrative rules or other agreements (AIA, etc..) related to public sector construction, including requirements for public bidding, retainage, lien waivers, and change order procedures. Quality Assurance: • Monitor workmanship and materials to ensure they meet design standards and specifications. • Identify and report non-conforming work and assist in developing corrective actions. Documentation & Review: • Review submittals, shop drawings, and samples for conformance with design intent. • Assist in evaluating change orders for scope, cost, and schedule impact, and provide input to support fair and informed decisions. Collaborate with the project team to prepare responses and negotiate appropriate adjustments with contractors when needed. Problem Solving: • Collaborate with the design team to resolve field issues and unforeseen conditions. • Provide input on constructability and sequencing to support project efficiency. Construction Site Superintendent

Job Title: Construction Site Superintendent Reports to: Chief Operating Officer Classification: Exempt Job Summary: The Construction Site Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all phases of construction projects from start to finish, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards and contract documents. The Superintendent serves as the primary on-site representative of the company, managing field operations, coordinating subcontractors, enforcing safety protocols, and maintaining communication with clients, inspectors, and project management. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: • Ensuring that the jobsite is a safe environment for clients, sub-contractors, staff and vendors by maintaining and upholding safety and quality standards set forth by company and contract documents. • Manage and drive project schedule for sub-contractors and vendors to complete project requirements and continue to push the project requirements and continue to push the project schedule forward. • Navigate through work-site conflicts and utilize problem solving skills to keep work on track. • Accurate completion of project according to contract documents while upholding company quality standards and meeting client expectations. • Communicate and consult Project Management Team with any delays or issues that arise impacting the project. • Utilization of company tools and resources for project management communication and documentation. • Completion of daily logs, weekly site walk-through and safety reports to identify areas where corrective action is required. Ensure timely completion is taken to resolve issues. • Manage and care for company vehicles and equipment being used on project sites to ensure safety requirements and regularly scheduled maintenance are being followed and completed. Requirements and Qualifications: Education: • High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor's degree in construction management or related field preferred. Experience: • 5+ years of progressive construction experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Certifications: • OSHA 30-hour Certification preferred; First Aid/CPR certification a plus. Technical Skills: • Strong understanding of construction documents and specifications. • Proficiency with construction management software (e/g/. Procore, PlanGrid, Sage Intacct, BlueBleam or Construction Manager) and MS Office Suite. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Soft Skills: • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities. • Strong organizational and time-management skills. • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Physical Requirements: • Must be able to stand, walk, and climb ladders or scaffolding for extended periods. • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. • Work is performed primarily on construction sites, subject to weather and environmental conditions. Work Environment: • Work is performed on active construction sites in varying weather conditions. • May require extended hours, weekends, and travel depending on project needs. Work Schedule: Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, or rotation of 2 weeks on, 4 days off, depending on project location with additional hours as required to meet project deadlines. Evening or weekend work may be necessary.
