Brick/Block Mason

Responsibilities: - Measure distance from reference points - Set up and prepare construction sites by clearing debris and setting up scaffolding - Build and repair structures using materials such as concrete block, brick, and stone - Calculate angles and determining the vertical and horizontal alinement of courses - Lay brick/block using mortar as a binder and a trowel to level - Perform restoration work on existing structures - Work safely on scaffold at various heights Skills: - Proficiency in brick/block laying techniques - Minimum 3 years industry experience in commercial construction site - For higher hourly wage - able to build leads *skills test required* - Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved with masonry and the construction of buildings - Ability to work independently or as a team - Physically fit and able to stand for long periods Note: This is not an exhaustive list of skills required for the position of Mason. AS A MASON, WHAT WOULD I DO? As a skilled mason, the contributions you make will last for generations. Masons work with brick, concrete block, stone, glass block, architectural precast and more. Work can be simple as building a wall or as complex as installing an ornate exterior, constructing a school or hospital. As with many construction trades, masonry work is done outdoors. The work is very physical, involving the use of hand tools, power tools and material-moving equipment. Every brick and block must be laid by hand and requires the skill of a craftsman - a true artist. A skilled mason knows the different patterns, textures and colors that create an attractive finished product. Masons must also be able to read blueprints, understand building codes and be knowledgeable of industry safety guidelines and rules for handling hazardous materials.
