Maintenance Helper/Generalists may assist skilled trades workers. Qualifications (minimum education, licensure, skills, and/or experience): High School Diploma or its equivalent Must pass a general physical examination. Must pass a criminal background investigation and drug screen. Satisfactory completion of a two-hour asbestos awareness training course within sixty days of employment. Willingness to take random alcohol and drug abuse testing if your job responsibilities involve driving a parish vehicle that requires a CDL license. (Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License.) Working knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the installation, maintenance, and repair of school buildings and equipment. Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe efficient use of tools, materials, and equipment. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of multiple trades/crafts. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Performs such minor interior repairs as installing and replacing locks, replacing windowpanes, adjusting doors, replacing faucets or washers, repairing toilets, clearing clogged drains, tightening pipe joints, hanging and repairing blinds, making and installing screens, replacing broken tiles, painting, repairing or replacing woodwork, repairing walls, and making minor repairs to furniture. Connects and repairs appliances, water heaters, air-conditioning units, kitchen equipment, and radiators; cleans, oils, and performs operating maintenance on small motors, fans, blowers, pumps and similar items. Performs such exterior repairs as tack welding, patching roof leaks, repairing or replacing gutters, steps, decking, guard rails, ramps, installing or repairing fences, installing or repairing concrete/asphalt walks and drives. Operating trucks, tractors, and other heavy equipment. Receives and transmits radio, telephone, or written messages. Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies by keeping up with and maintaining all School Board owned tools and equipment assigned to him/her. Assists in the loading and unloading of supplies and equipment at the warehouse or at school sites. Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Physical Demands: Must be in good health. Possesses physical skills and stamina to perform job responsibilities (e.g., lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, standing for extended periods of time, etc.) Ability to climb ladders or to position oneself in the inspection of buildings, grounds, and other structures and facilities. May be required to work outdoors, being exposed to various weather conditions.
