Hvac Technician

Hvac Technician Responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting HVAC systems of various sizes, including interior-mounted gas furnaces, in an industrial environment. Ensures peak performance and compliance with safety standards. Key Responsibilities: • Perform preventive maintenance on all HVAC equipment as required. • Diagnose and resolve issues to maintain system efficiency. • Weld, braze, and solder components with precision. • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and wiring diagrams. • Work outdoors for extended periods in temperatures ranging from 15°F to 100°F, servicing units daily in all weather conditions. • Operate powered vehicles, including but not limited to reach trucks, order pickers, aerial lifts, and articulating boom lifts. • Report to the Maintenance Supervisor, Infrastructure Support Coordinator, and/or Infrastructure Support Manager. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: • Properly operate all specialized equipment required for heating and air conditioning repair, servicing, and installation. • Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and wiring diagrams for A/C and heating systems. • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults in heating units, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, and exhaust fans, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. • Apply correct welding, soldering, and brazing techniques for HVAC system repairs. • Utilize material handling equipment, including lifts, power trucks, hand trucks, and roof tuggers. • Perform scheduled servicing of A/C units, heating systems, and dock heaters. • Remove and replace complete heating units and A/C compressors as needed. • Document services and repairs, maintaining accurate records to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including those established by the EPA for refrigerant handling. • Following the established ordering process to maintain proper inventory of HVAC supplies and equipment. • Repair or replace electric water heaters throughout the plant. • Conduct plumbing repairs and modifications as required. • Perform weekly and monthly testing and maintenance of the fire system. • Ability to work in extreme temperatures (e.g., 15°F to 100°F) and all-weather conditions. • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces. • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. • Ability to lift heavy equipment and stand for extended periods. Required Tools: Hand Tools • Screwdrivers & Nut Drivers – Various sizes for different fasteners. • Pliers – Needle-nose and channel-lock • Insulated pliers for gripping and cutting provided by American Greetings. • Wrenches – Adjustable, socket, and Allen wrenches for tightening and loosening components. • Hammers & Mallets – Used for securing parts and making adjustments. Power & Cutting Tools • Cordless Drill – Essential for drilling and fastening. • Tubing Cutters – For cutting pipes and ductwork. • Sheet Metal Snips – Used for shaping and cutting metal ductwork. Diagnostic & Measuring Tools • Multimeter – For testing electrical components provided by American Greetings. • Manifold Gauge Set – Measures refrigerant pressure provided by American Greetings. • Thermometers & Hygrometers – Monitors temperature and humidity levels provided by American Greetings. • Leak Detectors – Identifies refrigerant leaks provided by American Greetings. HVAC-Specific Tools • Vacuum Pump – Removes air and moisture from refrigerant lines provided by American Greetings. • Recovery Machine – Safely removes refrigerant from systems provided by American Greetings. • Brazing & Soldering Kit – For joining pipes and fittings provided by American Greetings. • Refrigerant Scale – Ensures accurate refrigerant charging provided by American Greetings. Safety & Material Handling Equipment • Gloves & Safety Goggles – Protects hands and eyes provided by American Greetings. Physical Demands: • Heavy Lifting – HVAC systems and tools may weigh 50 to 100+ pounds. Any object exceeding 40 pounds must be lifted by at least two associates or with mechanical assistance to ensure safety. • Climbing & Heights – Frequent use of ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts to access rooftop units. • Working in Tight Spaces – Technician often maneuvers in tights spaces and behind large units. • Extreme Temperatures – Work occurs in hot, humid, and cold environments, ranging from 15°F to 100°F. • Prolonged Standing & Kneeling – Extended periods of standing, crouching, and kneeling while servicing equipment. • Material Handling – Use of power trucks, hand trucks, and roof tuggers to transport heavy components. Safety Considerations • Proper Lifting Techniques – Training programs emphasize safe handling practices to prevent injuries. • Protective Gear – Use of gloves and safety goggles. • Environmental Hazards – Exposure to electrical components, refrigerants, and hazardous materials. Experience Required: • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of HVAC systems. • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical faults. • Proficiency in welding, brazing, and soldering. • Experience with reading and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings. • Familiarity with material handling equipment, such as lifts and power trucks. • Preferred 3 years’ experience in commercial or residential HVAC industries. Education Required: Education & Certification • High school diploma or GED. • Completion of an HVAC training program or apprenticeship. • 1-Year with an EPA Section 608 certification for handling refrigerants. • Additional state or local HVAC licensing, depending on regulations. • Preferred 2year Environmental technologies degree.
