Technician II - Building Maintenance/Carpenter

Salary: $24.23 - $37.97 Hourly Location : Public Works, AL Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 00126 Department: Public Works Division: Street Opening Date: 09/17/2025 Description Job Summary Under general direction the person in this position performs routine manual labor activities such as repairing or replacing needed structures, performs light maintenance and construction work such as painting, electrical work, repairs, concrete work and general carpentry. Supervisory responsibilities None Essential functions: MAINTENANCE • Handles general maintenance for all city buildings and sewer plant, including, but not limited to, painting, plumbing, electrical work and general maintenance to the buildings. • Works in the construction of new buildings performing general carpentry, plumbing and electrical. CONSTRUCTION WORK • Reads and follows blueprints in construction and repair of buildings. • Operates backhoe and drives trucks performing construction and maintenance activities. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Verbal skills to communicate with supervisor, general public and coworkers. • Reading skills to read building plans and instructions. • Ability to operate construction equipment and electric tools. • Driving skills to safely operate a vehicle. • Listening skills to follow verbal instructions. • General knowledge of electrical, plumbing, concrete work and painting. • Knowledge of safety rules, including accident causation and prevention. • Knowledge of city rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Qualifications: • Possess a valid Driver's License. • Willing to work overtime and non-standard hours, weekends and holidays as needed. Education and experience: • Possess a High School diploma or equivalent. Prefer technical school courses in carpentry, electrical and plumbing. • Prefer two years of experience as an electrician in commercial electrical work. • Minimum of five (5) years general maintenance. Physical demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities, recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as typewriters and record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity. Work environment: Work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts or machines, with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, etc. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gearsuch as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles or shields.
