Job Title: Welder Location: Yankton, SD Department: Metal Fabrication Job Summary: Lay out, fit, and weld fabricated steel or aluminum components, by performing the following duties. Welder I – Entry Level Responsibilities: • Select equipment and plan layout, assembly, and welding. • Direct setup personnel in layout, align, and the fitting of components together. • Set up equipment and weld parts, using arc, gas-shielded arc, or gas welding equipment. • Responsible for welding tasks as assigned by department manager. • Responsible for the equipment care and proper machine settings to optimize the welding equipment. • Report to the department manager any nonconformance of components and or machine function characteristics. • Completion of daily records which document completed work tasks. • Responsible for utilizing set-up assistant to fully optimize welding task, including: • Gathering parts and components for assemblies as assigned by department manager. • Assessment of welding jig to determine if maintenance adjustments are required. • Utilizing engineering drawings which display proper assembly and dimensional characteristics to weld components which meet requirements. (The drawings are relatively simple in nature and are not intended to include assembly instructions. This is an on-the-job acquired skill.) Welder II – Skilled Level Responsibilities: • Must meet all level 1 requirements • Select equipment and plan layout, assembly, and welding. • Set up equipment and weld parts, using arc, gas-shielded arc, or gas welding equipment. • Responsible for welding tasks, projects, schedules and timelines as assigned by Lead and/or Department Manager. • Responsible for the equipment care and proper machine settings to optimize the welding equipment. • Report to the Department Manager any nonconformance of components and/or machine function characteristics. • Completion of daily records which document completed work tasks. • Transfer to other areas when needed or as work requires. Welder III – Advanced Level Responsibilities: • Must meet all level 1 requirements • Must meet all level 2 requirements • Select equipment and plan layout, assembly and welding. • Require minimal guidance from Lead in welding area. • Direct setup personnel in layout, and align the fitting of components together. • Set up equipment and weld parts using arc, gas-shielded arc, or gas welding equipment. • Responsible for welding tasks as assigned by Lead and/or Department Manager. • Responsible for the equipment care and proper machine settings to optimize the welding equipment. • Report to the Area Lead any nonconformance of components and/or machine function characteristics. • Completion of daily records which document completed work tasks. • Responsible for utilizing set-up assistant to fully optimize welding task including: • Gather parts and components for assemblies as assigned by Department Manager. • Assess welding jig to determine if maintenance adjustments are required. • Utilize engineering drawings which display proper assembly and dimensional characteristics to weld components which meet requirements. (The drawings are relatively simple in nature and are not intended to include assembly instructions. What You'll Do • Read and understand assigned blueprints prior to starting a project. • Participate in process and product development and improvement programs. • Accurately inspect metal prior to welding to ensure clean welds. • Perform grinding operations that comply with Astec’s standards. • Ability to perform grinding and be able to pass a required welding skills test. • Necessary to be able to do all grinding tasks. • Must be able to safely weld vertical, flat, and overhead with both MIG and arc techniques. • Must inspect metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability and clean welds to presentable state. • Keep work area clean and neat. • Clock in on assigned jobs as appropriate. • Ensure welding machine settings are appropriate for work to be performed. • Must be able to safely use cranes and forklifts. • Must be trained in and know PPE requirements for welding including hood and filter shades and arm/body protection. • Must be able to read and understand weld symbols. • Must maintain welding machines by keeping them clean. • Follow company policies and procedures at all times. • Follow proper safety rules and procedures at all times. • Performs other duties as assigned.
