Job Title: Fabricator Welder Department: MERC College/Division: Mercer Engineering Research Center Primary Job Posting Location: Warner Robins, GA 31088-7810 Job Details: Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC), a research institute of Mercer University, provides high quality engineering, scientific, and technical support services to both government and private industry customers. The Fabricator Welder provides support to engineers in the areas of mechanical fabrication and prototyping under the supervision of the mechanical chief engineer. Will perform non-repetitive assignments of a complex and difficult nature involving the set-up and fabrication of a wide variety of weldment assemblies, fixtures, and one-of-a-kind components. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Ability to read and interpret technical data packages. • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc. welding equipment. • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material. • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly to ensure that the end product meets the technical data package requirements. • Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective equipment • Ability to perform tasks without difficulty and attention to detail. • Measuring and cutting materials to specifications. • Check finished work to verify that it falls within tolerances marked on the prints. • Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety. • Maintain a clean, organized work area. • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Ability to execute a wide variety of welding processes on various metal types. • Support prototype development activities, working with engineers on the design feasibility of prototype parts to be fabricated. • Provide recommendations related to welding methods or processes relative to improving productivity and quality of the prototype parts, components, assemblies, or fixtures. • Ability to work from blueprints, rough sketches, computer aided design (CAD) models, engineering drawings, and verbal instructions to fabricate a variety of weldment assemblies, fixtures, and one-of-a-kind components. • Makes calculations using handbook formulas to layout jigs and fixtures as required to ensure that the weldment maintains the necessary dimensions throughout the assembly process. • Knowledge of welding characteristics of a wide variety of materials including aluminum, steel, copper, brass, and other metals. • Ability to perform related fabrication work such as cutting, bending, forming, beveling, notching, etc. • Inspects work for conformance to specifications using precision-measuring instruments like micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and other gauges. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • US Citizenship is required. • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance. • Requires a well-rounded knowledge of fabrication and assembly techniques, tools and equipment, materials and shop practices. • Requires high school diploma or GED and technical certifications in the respective technical area. • Additional requirements may be added as appropriate and as specified in the specific Personnel Requisition Form. HVAC Mechanic/Welder This position is responsible for replacement and installation of HVAC systems, utilizing their knowledge of pipe fitting and welding: Ability to read and interpret blue prints and drawings. Lay out, fit, assembles, and installs various pipe systems. Inspects work for correct installation and best practices per specifications. Follows detailed work and plans of installation per Job under Supervisor and Contract schedule and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers. Cuts pipe, using saws, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine. Threads pipe, using pipe threading machine. Bends pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine. Assembles and installs variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings, including steel, copper, HDPE and PVC. Connects pipes, using threaded, Grooved, soldered, brazed, fused, and hand tools. Secures pipes to structure with brackets, anchors, Pipe Stands, clamps, and hangers, using hand tools and power tools. Installs HVAC components and equipment, such as but not limited to Chillers, Cooling Towers, Heat Exchangers, Boilers, Pumps, Air Handlers, Fan Coils, VAV s using hand tools. Able to assist in testing of pipe system and observe connected pressure gauge to test system for leaks. Repairs leaks and/or voids as required by specifications and/or Company. Minor troubleshooting and electrical. Brazing and Welding May operate machinery to verify repair. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. Must have a valid driver’s license.
