Job Purpose and Objectives: Performs skilled and semi-skilled mechanical and welding work on small and heavy equipment, and vehicles assigned to the Ellis County Public Works Department. Essential Functions: • Performs acetylene, arc, tig, wire welding, and cutting torch in repair and fabrication of bridges, cattle guards, special tools, small and heavy equipment, and vehicles • Fabricates new equipment and special tools when needed • Inspects, repairs, and sets up new small and heavy equipment and vehicles added to the fleet • Operates the lathe and mill when required for fabrication and repair • Maintains inventory of welding supplies including wire, gas, and steel • Maintains metal recycling bin with contracted servicer • Repairs engines, transmissions, drivelines, hydraulic systems, and brakes on equipment and vehicles • Disassembles defective equipment and vehicles and replaces defective parts • Operates all equipment and vehicles • Performs field repairs on work location • Cleans the shop area and stores tools • Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances • Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary • Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures • Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed • Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic Position Requirements and Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Position Requirements: • High school diploma or other equivalent • Three years of welding experience Certifications / Licenses: • Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement • The successful applicant will also be required to participate in the FHWA (CDL) drug-testing program. • Regular attendance is required. The winter schedule is Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm and during the warmer months (currently running) the schedule is Monday - Thursday 7:00 am - 5:30 pm. Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: • Knowledge of equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair • Skilled in fabrication of a variety of metal parts • Ability to weld and use welding tools including cutting torch, mill, lathe, and all other metal cutting tools • Ability to weld using a wide variety of welders including Arc, tig, and wire welders • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work • Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently • Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner • Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment • Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Problem solving and critical thinking skills • Strong math, spelling, computer, and calculator abilities • Ability to communicate in a professional, calm, and courteous manner with the general public and employees • Attention to detail

Description: Job Purpose: The Welder performs duties related to steel production. Essential Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned. • Sets and modifies welding machine settings per materials and parameters, makes welds according to specification on prints and inspects finished product. • Troubleshoots and fixes welds as needed or required by QC Inspector. • Performs weld on steel products to the applicable code (ASME & API Codes). • Follows prints accurately and operates grinders and other hand tools. • Operates overhead cranes and other lifting devices. • Accurately maintains required paperwork. • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations. Able to read welding symbols preferred. • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions. • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. • Experience using power tools and hand tools. • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
