About the position Responsibilities • Performs stick welding on steel natural gas lines, including downhill welds using 6010 and 7010 welding rods and uphill welds using 7018 hot rods. • Performs various construction and maintenance activities the majority of the time. • Installs pressure control fittings. • Completes steel main tie-ins, installing steel services and repair fittings. • Installs stations, farm taps and meter sets. • Performs natural gas leak investigation and detection and all installation and repair procedures of damaged service lines and plastic mains. • Sets up common Department of Transportation approved worksites. • Pinpoints and grade leaks on the natural gas distribution system. • Calibrates instruments. • Uses self-contained breathing apparatus equipment (when needed). • Completes a variety of paperwork in writing and electronic work queues. • Safely drives a company vehicle. Requirements • 0 - 12 months construction/utility experience. • Experience with common hand and power tools. • Ability to calibrate instruments and use self-contained breathing apparatus and pipe squeeze-off equipment. • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positive customer and contractor interactions. • Basic computer and internet navigation skills. • Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive driving procedures. • Ability to work independently and as a team member within a diverse team. • Availability for overtime, as needed. • Availability for natural gas emergency response during the workday, as well as in the evenings and some weekends, when on-call. • Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Chapel Hill area. • Occasional heavy lifting up to 80 lbs. independently. Nice-to-haves • 6 - 12 months of construction/utility experience. • 6 months welding experience. • Related welding experience and knowledge highly preferred. • Good mechanical aptitude. • General knowledge of pressure control and tapping/stopping procedures. • Bilingual (Spanish) candidates.
