Job Title: Welder / Fabricator Location: Lewiston/Auburn, ME Department: Fabrication / Production Reports To: Shop Foreman / Fabrication Supervisor Employment Type: Full-Time Pay Range: $20 – $26 per hour (based on experience) Position Summary We are looking for an experienced Welder/Fabricator who specializes in aluminum stairs, railings, and related structures. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in aluminum TIG and MIG welding, metal fabrication, and the ability to work from blueprints and shop drawings. This position offers a great opportunity to join a skilled team producing high-quality architectural and structural metalwork. Key Responsibilities • Fabricate and weld aluminum stairs and components (stringers, treads, landings, railings) to precise specifications. • Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and shop sketches. • Set up and operate MIG/TIG welding equipment for aluminum and occasionally steel or stainless projects. • Cut, bend, and shape metal using fabrication tools such as shears, brakes, saws, and grinders. • Fit and assemble metal components to ensure accurate fit and alignment. • Perform finishing operations—grinding, sanding, and polishing—for clean, professional welds. • Conduct quality checks to ensure welds meet company and industry standards. • Assist with installation or assembly of fabricated products as needed. • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace in compliance with company and OSHA standards. • Perform routine equipment maintenance and inspections. • Collaborate with team members, supervisors, and engineers to resolve fabrication or design challenges. Skills & Qualifications Required: • 3–5 years of welding/fabrication experience, including at least 2 years with aluminum. • Proficiency in TIG and MIG welding (aluminum focus). • Strong understanding of metal fabrication, layouts, and welding symbols. • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints. • Experience operating common shop fabrication tools (band saws, brakes, shears, grinders, etc.). • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Preferred: • AWS certification(s) in aluminum or structural welding. • Experience with custom architectural or structural metal fabrication. • Basic knowledge of metal stair and railing installation methods. Physical Requirements • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly. • Capable of standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods. • Strong manual dexterity and steady hand-eye coordination for precision work. • Comfortable working in a shop environment with noise, heat, and metal dust. • Ability to safely operate tools and machinery per company safety standards. Work Environment • Fabrication shop setting with occasional on-site installation work. • Required PPE includes welding helmet, gloves, safety glasses, and other protective gear. • Regular full-time hours, with possible overtime to meet project deadlines.

Welding Instructor

The purpose of the Welding Instructor is to organize and teach assigned classes utilizing various welding processes. Essential Duties: Instruct day classes using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, and Oxy Fuel processes. Deliver classroom lectures and presentations for welding courses. Maintain equipment, materials, and consumables required for individual programs. Aid the Welding Program Manager in coordinating efforts between the NESM welding program and specific companies/students requesting training. Other Duties: Organize the welding area for special programs and seminars. Fabricate improvements for the welding booths and other equipment required by the welding program. Maintain the welding area and manage its upkeep. Training: A minimum of five (5) years of welding experience utilizing SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, and Oxy Fuel processes is required. Preferred qualifications include a two-year technical degree in Welding Technology, current welding certifications, a working knowledge of AWS and ASME codes, and familiar with CWI accreditation. Decision Making: Deal effectively with any immediate problems and needs of the welding program through complete communication. Adapt to unexpected changes in day-to-day operations. Self -motivated to provide the best program possible. Communication: Express ideas and concepts of a technical nature to various audiences. Instruct individuals in welding techniques and processes. Communicate effectively with many types of people in different instructional situations. Results of Action: A continued growth of NESM programs resulting in educated and informed employees and students. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise all assigned welding classes. Supervise and run morning High School class. Supervise and run one-day courses one Saturday per month. Equipment Used All welding equipment, grinders, oxy-fuel torches, plasma arc and other equipment needed to successfully complete classes. Operate vehicles such as trucks and forklifts to move equipment and materials. Knowledge Skills: Extensive/Proficient knowledge of SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, Oxy Fuel and plasma arc. Ability to maintain welding machines and equipment. Basic computer and word processing skills. Working Conditions: The instructor position requires significant hands-on work, which can be physically demanding at times, day hours with one Saturday per month.
