GENERAL SUMMARY: The Plumber performs journeyman-level work assisting in the installation, repair, maintenance and fabrication of materials for plumbing systems throughout the facility. Adheres to department, local, state and national codes; estimates materials needed for projects; assists in coordinating the plumbing phases of construction projects within the facility; inventories, recommends and stocks parts and materials needed to perform duties; operates applicable hospital equipment. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Regularly inspects connections and assists in maintaining natural gas, medical gases, water, air, waste disposal and heating and cooling systems throughout the facility to ensure proper operation. 3. *Installs, constructs, repairs and maintains builiding systems and equipment in accordance with departmental, local, state and federal codes/guidelines. 4. *Performs various construction tasks to meet departmental standards for new, remodeled or repaired plumbing systems; installs, replaces and re-routes piping for back flow systems, medical gases, water, waste and heating and cooling systems; installs back flow devices and tamper valves for fire water systems. 5. *Conducts biannual fire pump tests; maintains logs, records and reports as rquired by regulatory agencies for routine work and preventative maintenance. 6. Detects malfunctioning equipment before damage occurs; utilizes information within manufacturer's manuals, troubleshooting techniques and preventative maintenance schedules to repair and maintain equipment and building systems; cares for tools and equipment. 7. *Responds to all maintenance service requests for plumbing or related repair; installs and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures; estimates the cost of installation or repair work. 8. Collaborates with facility/departmental personnel, contractors, subcontractors and regulatory representatives to ensure existing and proposed plumbing equipment/systems meet user, building specifications and regulatory requirements. 9. Requisitions pipes and fittings; maintains inventory of appropriate tool and supply items. 10. *Installs troubleshoots repairs and replaces auxiliary equipment including steam traps, humidifiers, pressure-reducing valves, condensate pumps, medical air compressors/vacuum pumps and alarms systems. 11. *Utilizes various maintenance techniques to weld, fabricate and repair equipment such as soldering and brazing. 12. Maintains computerized controlled systems, i.e., pneumatic tube system, fire alarm system and nurse call system. 13. Acts as lead plumber on some skilled assignments; provides direction, support and mentoring to other maintenance personnel regarding plumbing systems and related equipment. 14. Writes and updates preventative maintenance operating procedures and schedules for appropriate equipment and systems. 15. Follows facility and professional work procedures to ensure personal, coworker and patient/visitor safety. 16. Attends classes to expand and maintain proficiency on assigned equipment and systems; advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education, reading periodicals/reference books and seeking ongoing developmental opportunities. 17. Enters restricted access areas, without supervision, to perform assigned work. 18. Responds to snow emergencies when needed. 19. Performs other related duties as assigned. Attach Addendum for positions with slightly different roles or work-specific differences as needed. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Knowledge of the plumbing code, ordinances and other regulatory requirements. 2. Knowledge in the methods and practices of maintenance and repair of utility systems. 3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 4. Knowledge of AC/DC (stick) welding, brazing and soldering applications and techniques. 5. Knowledge of plumbing and mechanical safety precautions and intervention techniques. 6. Skill in the operation and maintenance of power tools, hand tools and measuring devices. 7. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 8. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 9. Ability to practice proper body mechanics to ensure personal and customer/patient safety. 10. Ability to estimate materials, time and costs of plumbing projects. 11. Ability to detect and utilize problem-solving skills in correcting malfunctioning systems. 12. Ability to fit and route pipe, design and install special equipment. 13. Ability to read, interpret and analyze schematics, written drawings and blueprints. 14. Ability to react and function appropriately under stressful and in emergency situations. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalency required. Possession of a Journeyman Plumber License from the Examining Board of Plumbers in accordance with Paragraph 24-06-130, of the Lincoln Municipal Code required. Prior experience in a mechanical trade including plumbing, refrigeration or general machine work preferred. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Valid State of Nebraska Driver's License required. Verification and maintenance of responsible driving record per facility standards required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.) (DOT) – Characterized as very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Long periods of standing, lifting, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling with occasional exposure to high voltage, high temperatures and heights from 25 - 120 feet; exposure to latex, body fluid, blood, fiberglass and fire proofing insulation dust, noise and exposure to wet and damp places. May work in an on-call capacity and be required to work holidays, weekends, evening and nights, overtime as needed including seasonal work, i.e., snow removal.
