Position Purpose Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes. May perform preventive maintenance on all plumbing systems including domestic water, hot water, chilled water, sewer, storm water, air, gas and vacuum. Essential Functions and Basic Duties: • Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using a variety of methods. • Repair and maintain plumbing, replacing defective washers, replacing or mending broken pipes and opening clogged drains. • Trouble-shoot plumbing system malfunctions to isolate problems or to verify that malfunctions have been corrected. • Repair or replace defective equipment, fixtures or piping. • Reassemble and test equipment, fixtures or pipes following repairs. • Record and report all faults, deficiencies and other unusual occurrences, as well as the time and materials expended on work orders. • Generate work orders that address deficiencies in need of additional correction. • Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances and fixtures, using hand and power tools. • Read and interpret blueprints, design specifications and structures to assess material and equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring. • Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes and fixtures in structures. • Cut openings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings using hand and power tools. • Hang steel supports from ceiling joists to hold pipes in place. • Install underground storm, sanitary and water piping systems and extend piping to connect fixtures and plumbing to these systems. • Measure, cut, thread and bend pipe or tubing, using pipefitter’s tools. Test pipes by filling with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks. • Install oxygen and medical gas in hospitals or medical offices. • Use specialized techniques, equipment or materials, such as performing computer assisted welding of small pipes or working with special piping. Significant challenges critical to success in this job: • Knowledge in plumbing processes and code compliance. • Ability to think ahead in the process and to work a quick efficient pace all day long. • Communicate with different departments and staff continuously. Qualifications Training, education or certification: • Vocational certification in Plumbing. • Licensed by the City of Topeka. Journeyman and apprentice each have specific continuing education requirements to maintain. Knowledge: • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repairs and maintenance. • Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings and other structures. • Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing and sheet metal processes. Experience: • Depends on the level of skill and certification. Skills and abilities: • Skill in analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems. • Ability to determine causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. • Ability to read and interpret blue prints and other diagrams. Contacts Has regular contact with office personnel and commercial foremen. Has regular contact with vendors, technical support and customers. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Exerts 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently. Required walking or standing to a significant degree; or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls.
