## **PRIMARY FUNCTIONS** This is skilled work of the plumbing and steam fitting trades at the journeyperson level. Work involves the installation, maintenance and repair of piping, heating equipment, plumbing systems and related accessories. Work is performed in accordance with standard plumbing and steam fitting practices, with assignments received orally or in writing. An employee is responsible for determining materials and work methods necessary for effective completion of assigned tasks. Work is reviewed and inspected by the Supervisor for Technical Maintenance, or an assigned foreperson for quality and compliance with trade regulations. Work location: Shop at 375 Quinnipiac Ave, and all BOE facilities throughout the city. ## **TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** - Cuts openings for pipes in walls, floors and ceilings; bends, cuts and threads pipes. - Installs, maintains and repairs components of plumbing systems. - Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces components of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. - Inspects plumbing and heating equipment for possible defects using standard testing devices. - Estimates, reports and maintains records of time and materials required for job performance. - Maintains piping systems by opening clogged drains with a plunger or other power equipment. - Installs, maintains, and repairs valves, faucets, traps, sinks, washbowls, sewers, vents and other sanitary fixtures. - Installs and services sump pumps, ejectors pumps and condensate tanks. - Installs gas and electronic hot water tanks. - Inspects and maintains heat exchanges, shot feeders, condensate traps and circulators, including floor mounted. - Inspects, installs and maintains all gas installations. - Inspects, installs and maintains boilers and related equipment. - Performs related work as required. ## **EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE** Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school and 5 to 7 years of experience in plumbing and steam fitting trades; or any equivalent combination of training or experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills: ## **KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES** - Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and practices of the plumbing and heating trades. - Thorough knowledge of established regulations and codes pertaining to the plumbing and steam fitting trades. - Ability to understand and work from general instructions and specifications, and follow blueprints and sketches. - Skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment of the plumbing and steam fitting trades. ## **NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS** The candidate is required to have a journeyman’s plumber and steamfitter license issued by the State of Connecticut by time of hire. • *Minimum license:** - P-2 -- UNLIMITED JOURNEYPERSON PLUMBER • *and/or** - S-2 -- UNLIMITED HEATING, PIPING, AND COOLING JOURNEYPERSON ## **SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT** This is a "**General Fund**," tested position.
